Yes they are. When someone pushes you the normal reaction isn't to do a nice somersault. Seagal is BS

mouser - 2008-04-02

Seagal _is_ BS. But Aikido isn't. Every articulation lock is meant to crush said articulation if you do not know how to fall to get out of the lock. That's what's happening here. You tend to want your partner to come back for next class so while you teach them the moves, you also teach them how to break fall and let go of the articulation lock _before_ it's too late.

When your elbow is about to snap and you're out of balance, you have only two choice: let it snap or break fall. Period.

the point is mouser, is no one is resisting any of this. If you're not practicing against a resiting opponent what's the point? You can beat up anyone in anyway if they arent fighting back.

Having been on the receiving end of demos like these, no, they aren't.

They're doing a form that's a smidge less brutal than the one I practice, and it's a demo, so it's supposed to look nice too, but the principle remains:

You can go down with a pretty roll, or you can go down with a broken wrist/arm, your choice.

People who have never practices Aikido confuse it for dancing...

The "normal reaction" of falling awkwardly and getting hurt makes for a very short demo.

I'd still like to see a UFC fight between a master and a brawler. Then I'd be convinced.
