They didn't really take comfort, I don't think. He got the same shit from the Christian right that Obama is getting, for the same reasons: His weird name, his suspected religious allegiances to places outside of America, his liberal (and therefore communist) leanings, and his connections to dirty immigrants.

buttnutt - 2008-09-14

His main problem was being Catholic (not a WASP). He was even asked if he would kneel and kiss the Pope's ring (who evangelicals think is the anti-Christ, which he said no to.

RomancingTrain - 2008-09-15

What? Kennedy was a weird name in the 1960s?

baleen - 2008-09-15

It was for a politician.

citrusmirakel - 2008-09-14

WASP = White Anglo Saxon Protestant.
Kennedy was a Catholic.

Also, this is kinda boring.

Cena_mark - 2008-09-14

Yeah, this election isn't about Catholics vs Protestants. This is about all Christians uniting against Muslims and the secular.

baleen - 2008-09-14

Christians are far from "united" in the religious right's persecution of anything different than them. My mother is a devout Catholic and a lay nun in the Benedictine order. She speaks Latin fluently and translates Christian texts that you have never heard of (and never will) from their Gothic German into English.

Rightwing Christians have left her death threats simply for her opposition to the war, so don't talk about Christians "uniting." You are dividing Christianity and hurting people.

Brautwurst_Barbarian - 2008-09-14

Baleen, you idiot.

Cena's talking about REAL CHRISTIANS, not the evil perverse ones that dislike war like your mother!

baleen - 2008-09-14

Ohhhh. Shit.

RockBolt - 2008-09-14

TEH SECULAR

Exegesis_Saves - 2008-09-14

Context: Kennedy invoked the separation of church and state to comfort the WASPS - i.e. to reassure them that he was no slavish papist.

sonichronique - 2008-09-14

John and Bobby were total assholes, but I at least agree w/JFK on this.

Maggot Brain - 2008-09-15

Growing up in a Catholic household JFK was made out to be this big hero. Never really got why.

Domino theory and bay of pigs was pretty fucked up... But, you know, Peace Corps? The desire to end racial segregation? Immigration rights and not just for people of European descent? Exploring space?
