The data I've just read is confusing. Is this a type of caterpillar, http://www.nzetc.org/tm/scholarly/tei-Gov05_02Rail-t1-body-d21 -d2.html or fungus gnat? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachnocampa It would appear that the wiki article is correct but what kind of misinfromation could have led to the first article?
Mind the page break on the first link, remove space after d21. Look up railroad worm. Red & green!
Bolitiphila Luminosa was the old name, changed in 1924 to Arachnocampa luminosa. The first article write "caterpillar" when they mean "larva". Both are describing the same insect.
Equal parts beautiful and nightmarish.
that's nature for ya!
"mucus hammock"
Awesome. Snot. It's what's for diner.
okay... this doesn't remind anyone else of the barnacles from half-life?
Well it does now.
hahahahah....yes yes they do
Dammit nature, why?
To make you question to existence of a loving god.
Pretty obvious by now that if there was one, it hates every living thing on the planet and is a huge fan of shadenfreude.
clearly the source for the barnacle monster in Half Life 2
I was gonna say all those insects needed to do was throw an explosive barrel at the silk and they could get by just fine.
Or just wait until it's almost in the mouth, then swing the crowbar like mad!!
Didn't the Smiths have a song about this? "Predatory glow worms The sun shines out of our behinds..."
I swear I thought the same thing when he said that...
I was perfectly content not knowing I had to share the planet with this thing.
OM NOM NOM NOM
Yeah? Well, I'm bigger than you!
Oh god
Aren't these guys a result of the inter-dimensional portal accident at Black Mesa?
