This level of humor in Burroughs' writing was lost on me, in all honesty, until I first heard him reading his own material and it was like a curtain being opened.

Had the exact same experience. When I first picked up 'Naked Lunch' I actually tried to take it seriously, until that whole 'The tenor is a brown artist!' thing. It's too bad we don't have anyone like him now.
