I think they purposely designed it so the ball had an excellent chance of falling back between the flipping whenever you hit the saucer.
The final piece of the puzzle drops... This Nik Ehrlich guy seems to indeed have been the voice.
And his resume is a little shocking.

One of my favorite pinball games of it's day. One could easily play for hours on one credit. We would routinely have to leave multiple credits on the machine once the bar closed.
And certainly possible to play without tilting.
