Every round, the contents of each cell shifted up by one (cell 3 sent whatever it had to cell 4, for example). You had to play several moves ahead, if you could, to even try to come to a draw game.
He offered one free rise in your letter grade if you could beat it. To my knowledge, nobody ever did.
