I like how his friend holds on to his cigarette with one hand while trying to figure out if the guy has been shot with the other. That's dedication to your buddy!

TeenerTot - 2009-04-29

This made me really sad.

Dinanukht - 2009-04-29

Thanks for posting this.

smoothbrain - 2009-04-29

Stay classy, Israel.

Camonk - 2009-04-29

Nobody saw the rest of the video. Nobody knows what he was doing before that.

Maybe he deserved it.

SolRo - 2009-04-29

waving a sign and shouting at heavly armed israeli soldiers behind a barbed wire barrier, no wonder the israelies had to hurt him for such dangerous behavior

Michael Houser - 2009-04-29

I can hardly wait for the day when the usual 'well what happened right before that maybe he deserved it' comment is made, and it turns out that there is in fact a video of the victim's entire day, in real-time, from getting out of bed until the incident.
"There!!! That's what happened!"
"Well, yeah ... but what were you doing the day before, huh?!"

millerman13 - 2009-04-29

Murder paid for by US tax dollars! Aren't you glad you just filed your taxes?

garcet71283 - 2009-04-29

Pallywood anybody?

EvilHomer - 2009-04-29

That's what I was wondering, too. The way he falls over, the reactions of his buddies, it doesn't feel right. I checked online to see if I could find any other info, but there's not much detail on the story- mainly just mirrors of two or three blog posts about the video. I did find one newspaper article:

http://www.turkishweekly.net/news/73013/-idf-palestinian-offic ials-jointly-probe-death-of-arab-protester-in-bil-in.html

...but not much else. There's more info on Google about cena_mark than there is about this "well-known" Bassem guy. I don't want to call FAKE, mostly because I don't want this guy returning from the grave to eat me if he really did get murdered by the Jews, but if anyone can find more information on this story I'd appreciate it.

millerman13 - 2009-04-29

Don't you even think that just because this story can't be 100% confirmed that the Israelis have never done anything like this, ever. If it wasn't "Baseem" it would have been someone else. Just because this guy isn't a high ranking official should we think it unimportant. This shit goes on every day, and when people do hear about it, it's doubted by people like you. Yeah, because all the Palestinians are "faking" it...

svraz - 2009-04-29

Are you saying that this did not happen? That anything that is documented to have happened/happens to Palestinian people is just "Pally"propaganda? Perhaps the whole occupation is just Palestinian propaganda as well. Of course the documentary you refer to, by Richard Landis (who believes in theories about Muslims that has been described in the Ecomonist as "outlandish conspiracy theory [that} has become a dangerous Islamophobic fantasy" ) is an objective piece of journalism.

Enjoy - 2009-04-29

*** SPOILER ****

svraz - 2009-04-29

Spelling error:
Thats the Economist not the Ecomonist.

EvilHomer - 2009-04-29

Well sure, maybe it "would have been someone else", and then again maybe it wouldn't. But if it wasn't Baseem then it wasn't Baseem, simple as that! I hope you're not seriously suggesting that trickery is excusable because "well gosh, those guys WOULD have done something mean like this, I'm sure", miller my man.

And no, sraz, not everything that happens to the Palestinians is Pally propaganda. But the stuff that doesn't happen IS Pally propaganda, and surely everyone can agree that it's important to be able to sort out which incidents are true and which are not.

Am I saying this did not happen? No, I think I made it clear that I don't know if it happened. I'll admit that the video isn't very convincing and the almost total lack of corroborating sources sets my Propagandar on High Alert, but the lack of information also makes it impossible to write the story off out of hand.

(and for the record, while I can't say one way or the other whether that Landis fellow is or isn't a conspiracy theorist, it's hard to argue with "murdered" Palestinians suddenly getting out of the ambulance and running around again.)

SolRo - 2009-04-29

the BBC ran it too, fucking morons

millerman13 - 2009-04-29

If it wasn't "Baseem" then it would have been "Baseem 2" or "Baseem 3." Let's just let "Baseem" be another Palestinian rightfully protesting the occupation of Israel. I think Israel's actions fall way past "mean" and into the extremely criminal. You and I both know that if it hadn't been that young man in the video it would have been another.

You make a good point. It is important to sort out which incidents are true and which ones are not. What about Israeli propaganda? Is that just as bad as "Pally" propaganda? Or do you really believe that Israel has done nothing wrong over the course of 60 years? "Oh gee golly taking all that land from the Palestinians really is a good thing, dontcha see because it uh, it makes their lives better when we look out for em!" You aren't that stupid.

millerman13 - 2009-04-29

*Occupation of Palestine by Israel

EvilHomer - 2009-04-29

No, you're absolutely right, I'm not that stupid. When it happens, Israeli propaganda is just as bad as Pally propaganda, and if you upload a pro-Israeli video which looks suspicious/ is confirmed to be fake, then I'll be more than happy to kill the "those evil Palestinians" party too! I've been on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (as it plays out here in the comfy confines of the Western World), and I have to say that at this point I'm sick of the lot of 'em.

But again, regardless of what YOU think of the conflict, the fact of the matter is that propaganda is propaganda, plain and simple. If it wasn't Baseem (again, IF), the we should acknowledge that it wasn't Baseem and lay the issue to rest. If Israel is really that bad, then we're sure to have more than enough REAL sources of outrage to keep us occupied, but there's no excuse for false outrage.

And SolRo, I found some more info from the Guardian, but if you have links to the BBC coverage I'd appreciate it. His name seems to have been misspelled in the sources I got it from, and "Bassem Abu Rahmeh" turns up considerably more information. I still don't buy the footage, but I'm willing to bet that the incident did take place.

millerman13 - 2009-04-29

False outrage or not, there are plenty of real sources out there that reaffirm what we already know about Israel. How much more information do you need? I don't think one conspicuous example should negate the myriad of information that's out there...

EvilHomer - 2009-04-29

No, it doesn't, and I never said it did. You're reading what you want to into this, miller, but that's not surprising, seeing how vicious and partisan the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can be- I know I've put words into peoples mouths before when we got into the topic.

I'm neither saying that Israel is innocent of massive crimes against Palestine, nor that Israel is guilty. I'm simply saying that we should think carefully about what we see (which I hope everyone will agree with) and that I'm not convinced by this particular video. After the past exhaustive ten minutes of sleuthing, I think I can safely say that my Propagandar went off prematurely and that, even if the incident being reported is not what we're watching, the incident really did occur.

So in conclusion, I'm sorry if I didn't make it sufficiently clear that I wasn't trying to play the old "Zionazi vs Pallytard" game, but I'm not sorry for being skeptical- that's my nature. It's necessary, especially in an issue that's as emotionally charged and prone to media manipulation as this one.

Ryo-Cokey - 2009-04-29

Ok, it's obvious Millerman13 is Dan Rather.

dorje - 2009-04-29

I love fourth generation warfare.

millerman13 - 2009-04-29

One cannot find faults in skepticism. You voiced it much more eloquently than I could have.
