So, it's like that episode of the X-files?

lieutenant halfabeef - 2009-07-13

That terrible, terrible episode. Written by William Gibson.

Big Beef Burritos Supreme - 2009-07-13

Running Man.

It's come to something when we look back on films like that with longing. We had no idea how much worse it things were going to get.

Death Race 2000.

I'm just waiting for Microsoft to announce that Project Natal was just a viral ad for this movie and not something they're actually working on.

No matter how much time passes, there is one thing of which Hollywood remains absolutely convinced: Five or so years into the future, society is going to be all about death row inmates getting killed for our amusement.

And they will do it because if they last long enough without dying they get set free, and the justice system will be okay with this because they know that the only inmate who will actually make it out will turn out to not be such a bad guy after all.

And meanwhile someone on the outside will raise an objection to the whole bloodsport thing but that person will generally be drowned out by society's unconditional love for watching death row inmates get vivisected.

And at some point, that objector person will make a speech about how OH IF ONLY SOMEONE HAD WARNED US back in the good old days of 2009, that society's love of violence would reach such absurd levels. Because once shooting imaginary video game people became popular, the inevitable consequence was that everyone everywhere would begin to take pleasure from committing actual murders. Also at some point in the speech there will be a reference to ancient Roman gladiators. It will all be very moving.

Also, I guess Ludicrous will be involved somehow.

Anyway, you'd best prepare yourselves, because this is the inevitable future which is coming five or so years from now, as Hollywood has tried to warn us since about 1965 (when it was also just five or so years away. The future is tricky.)

Bulbed.

Toenails - 2009-07-13

The only future I'm worried about is the one where Asylum decides to milk this cliche with their own version of the same movie, albeit with even less effort and talent.

Expect a trailer from them in the next few months called "Game Player".

At least they accurately predict that the future of games will be more grey and colorless and filled with bloom and lens flare.

Could only be improved by a Deep Sea Van.
