A mechanism causes the cylinder (ie the revolving part of the revolver) to press up and seal the gap between it and the barrel every time it is fired. This is supposed to help increase the velocity.
Equipped with a suppressor, the Nagant was used by the likes of the Cheka then the NKVD, and then the KGB for assassinations sometimes.

MrBuddy I remember this action movie with uh... I think it was Steven Segal where he used a pillow for a silencer and not only did it work but it also made the "thwerp" sound as you put it. This is how Hollywood turns a drama into an unintentional comedy.

Plus why the hell not, so long as your are not hurting anybody go ahead and put a silencer on any firearm you want. Its legal (in the U.S.) so long as it is on the NFA database.

Ponasty I wish my neighbors would use a silencer when they blow of some steam on the weekends. I like guns as much as the next guy (assuming the next guy loves guns) but i also love a little peace and quiet.
