Those are botfly larvae. They live in and consume living tissue.

Most likely, the eggs were laid directly on the dog's nose. When they hatched, the maggots took up residence in the sinuses, then burrowed out into his skin. The big holes from which the maggots were removed were air holes made by the maggots themselves.

Botflies are evil and horrible things. They do this to all sorts of animals, including humans. They don't even help clean up decaying matter like other flies. If they disappeared from the planet, they would not be missed.

Poor pup. I hope he or she is okay, now.
