They are definitely retarded, but they are told what to say most of the time and the drama and interpersonal tension is scripted. Usually by the same people who edit it. Because of this, they don't have to be paid as television writers. The WGA is making this a major issue and could probably destroy this kind of reality television if they're ever successful.

I know one of the girls who was on Scream Queens on VH1. She was paid $75 a day to make an ass of herself on national television, but that is the level of desperation actors get themselves into.
