"Orchestrated jazz" was contentious and maligned in it's day. Raymond Scott's insistence on having all his numbers written out and refusal to allow his musicians to deviate, despite playing something that sounded EXACTLY LIKE riffing, was generally hated by his peers.

But I love it.
