While I agree completely, the soldier in this video doesn't really insinuate that Islam is the problem. He didn't tell them to start worshiping Jesus or anything, but advised them to start worshiping something that actually has the ability to impact their lives.

Soldiers are actual people. Their identities vary. So do their coping mechanisms.

My brother was a 50mm gunner in the Basra Delta. While he has a heart of gold and is one of the most balanced and compassionate people I have ever met in my life, when people are trying to kill you and blow up children and what not you tend to get a little crazy. He once lectured some of the kids on his ship who were mocking an Iraqi crew member, but when it came down to a near death experience one night he turned suddenly and began spouting all kinds of terrible paranoid shit. This is something very difficult for people who lack imagination or a war experience to understand.

Gommorah would like to think he doesn't have this dark side in him, but he most likely does. He probably just directs it at himself and at American soldiers.

splatterbabble, if I'm reading into your first comment right, I think you're suggesting socio-economic reasons for the problems coming out of Muslim societies, akin to, say, what Chris Hedges often argues. That if Muslims had the proper means to create prosperity for themselves, the terrorism would lessen, etc.. I think this doesn't get at the heart of the problem. The language Muslims have to talk about the world, the same language used to orientate themselves within the world, that is to say their religion, the Islamic discourse community that is rooted within the Qur'an, explicitly justifies violence. I suggest watching this debate between Sam Harris and Chris Hedges. Harris' example of Jainism I think makes this point quite clear.

Now before someone jumps down my throat, I accept socio-economic conditions as sufficient and perhaps precipitating cause, but in the case of Muslim terrorism, Islam is a necessary cause.

Islam isn't compelling people to fight this war, repelling a foreign invader is compelling people to fight this war. I have a really hard time saying "If they weren't Muslim, we wouldn't be fighting" because, really, if Hindus or Eskimos or Aboriginal Australians had oil, I'm sure we would be fighting those people. That's why we're embroiled in a war in Iraq and Afghanistan when we should REALLY be trying to stop the REAL tragedy and terrorism in North Korea and Central Africa.
