The exact same thing happened in my classroom when the teacher decided we needed some dwarf hamsters for enrichment. The only difference was it was definitely for real, and involved a student who was not right in the head, and may have stomped it intentionally.
(I'm sorry, but I can't rate something that brings back such disturbing memories)
