Apparently a fight was planned for this game, and to initiate a player from Vityaz Chekhov (home team, the guys in red), shot a puck at a player from Avangard Omsk in the pre-game warmup, and there was very nearly a fight before the game began. As an added interesting fact, when these guys played a year ago, one player from Avangard that had been doping had a heart attack and died on the bench during the game.

fermun Also, these fights resulted in 691 penalty minutes, which is a record as far as I can tell. Vityaz Chekhov has some huge reputation as being just a bunch of bruisers. They hire people from all over to do their fighting and apparently they have a big sign somewhere visible in this video that says “Who comes to us with the sword shall perish by the sword.” The guy who instigated all of this is Darcy Verot, who is Vityaz's "tafgai" (what, Russia couldn't think of their own word for tuff guy?) a Canadian who has picked up 289 penalty minutes in the 25 games he's played this season.

Just like any college hockey team brawl, which happen quite consistently, only it was 3 times longer.
Also the fight went on longer than the game did.
