to be fair, his penis is tiny

When he uses the Taser, does he yell out "TASER!"
Camonk - 2010-02-18
Then, as she falls, he yells, GET ON THE GROUND!

He's watched too much anime. =(

ShiftlessRastus - 2010-02-18
You know he practiced that in front of a mirror for hours the day it was issued. He has the spirit of all 10-year-old boys trapped in doughy southern cop bodies. TASER!!!

kingofthenothing - 2010-02-17
Now we know what happens when the unstoppable grandma meets the immovable police officer.
Avengingatheist - 2010-02-18
Grandma got tased by the pigs coming home from our house, Christmas. Eve
phalsebob - 2010-02-18
Oh sure they can tase black people and Muslim college students, but now they are fucking with the wrong people. Old white people have nothing to do but vote, talk about politics at coffee clutch, and write cheques to their favourite party. Next time this cop meets her, he may be asking which toppings she wants on her sub.
Rodents of Unusual Size - 2010-02-18
Jesus Fucking Christ, what a fucking piece of shit.

And is it just me or do completely asinine taserings like this seem to only happen in the South?

The Youtube comments to this are gold.

A brief summary of some of them:

They happen in Portland all the time. With real guns.

garcet71283 - 2010-02-21
And western Washington, don't forget western Washington!

catpenis27 - 2010-10-19
People get tased constantly in California. Or shot. Whatever gun like object is closer to his free hand.

Not just grandma, great-grandma. I can't say I'm a fan of 72-year-old drivers, but come on. It isn't pepper spray, and heart problems are more likely than not at that age.

Nothing will happen to him, because it's the procedure that's fucked up, and for that to change you need politicians with balls.

If she's smart she'll join the chorus of wrongful tasing lawsuits and get something for her trouble while putting some pressure on Austin to better explain to their cops what in their arsenal is and isn't a toy (none of it).

Every cop is Robocop in the year 2010.
James Woods - 2010-02-18
This is fucked.
Cube - 2010-02-18
After she's tased and cuffed, she jumps INSTANTLY back up, free from cuffs and is again telling the cop she's going back to her car.

Young people should learn something from that never-give-up spirit.
charmlessman - 2010-02-18
Y'know, this is the rare moment where I'm going to come down on COMPLETELY the opposite side I normally do.

He warned her three times that he would tase her. She didn't listen. He tased her. Seems reasonable to me. Just because she's old doesn't mean she doesn't have to obey a lawful command.
mon666ster - 2010-02-18
Bullshit. If he'd warned her three times that he was going to shoot her and then shot her with a real gun just because she didn't do what she was told, would that be justified? Cops shouldn't be using their taser unless they are in danger or someone else is. Just tasing (tazing?) old people because they won't put their hands on the car or whatever, despite them obviously posing no threat, is completely unjustified. This pig should be stripped of his badge and thrown in prison (general population) for assaulting an old woman like this.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-02-18
I'd go even further and say that they shouldn't use it except in cases where they'd ordinarily use a gun.

But most departments are not so strict; many allow its use in all cases where the person is considered a "danger," without regard for age, health, or other factors that would allow one person to handle being electrocuted better than another.

Umaro - 2010-02-18
Tasers aren't guns. They're a way of getting people to stfu and listen to the cop. If she had done what she was told, this all could have been avoided. Sure, he could have tried to fight her down... but why? Clearly she was going to just try and fight back anyway.

Mister Yuck - 2010-02-18
When he zapped her, she had her back to him and she wasn't moving towards her car. He's a shitty cop for letting this situation get out of control, he's a shitty cop for answering verbal abuse with force, and he's a shitty cop taking down someone who was neither fleeing or endangering him.

That said, he'd be a shitty cop whether he took her down with the taser or his bare hands, the zap gun isn't the big problem here.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-02-19
The fact that she wasn't listening doesn't automatically justify anything beyond an arrest. Use of force is dealt with separately, AFAIK, and is justified later according to common law regarding self-defense.

Again, I just think tasers should be used a lot less than they are currently, and they shouldn't be used outside of what can be considered healthy adults.

And I guess there's just this sense that, regardless of what the system allows, she's lived long enough that she shouldn't have to deal with shit like getting tased.

It sort of goes along with Patton Oswalt's bit about how if you're 100 you should be allowed to strangle people, because if they can't defend against it they deserve to die anyway.

Paracelsus - 2010-02-19
Two cents: Isn't appropriate use of force always a judgment call within broad regulatory boundaries? The question is, was there a better way to handle this than giving a geriatric pain in the ass the same treatment you'd give a belligerent twentysomething on meth that might actually pose a danger?

exar_kun - 2010-03-23
You don't listen and do what the cop says you get tazered. If she had a heart condition then its on her for not following the officers directions. I'm an asshole, friends and family agree on that, but I've never been in a situation where I've almost been tazered because when confronted by a police officer I do what they tell me to, its really fucking simple. People bitch and moan about police brutality, but its not easy being a cop, you never know when something routine as a traffic stop is going to get you shot in the face. When at your faggot job, someone might try to shoot you every time you go to make copies I bet you wouldn't take any chances either. By the way check out the black college student getting arrested for threatening people and throwing things in class. CLASSIC.
