Right. 90's bands not selling out giant standiums has absolutely nothing to do with the collapse of the music industry because of internet piracy, and must be MUST be because Kurt Cobian decided not to get a perm and wear makeup and fill his music with maudlin pretentious guitar solos.

Has this guy ever heard of the fucking Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Jesus Christ, just die already. We don't need you and never did.

Oi. Steve Clark played exactly 0 pretentious guitar solos.

How would piracy have a downward effect on ticket sales?

Well, if he's not saying the 80s rockers were *better* than the stuff in the 90s - which he was pretty careful not to do - he's basically right, and mostly for the reasons he gave. REM is the odd one out there though, cause they were introspective and a lotta 90s bands were following them. I can name quite a few 90s rock acts still producing shit tho.

The Mothership - 2010-03-09
Yea dude, after "you got the peaches, I got the cream" music just went downhill.
charmlessman - 2010-03-09
You know what, Sour Grapes? Don't speak for me.

Dude may hate 90s music, but he can't tell me that children of the 90s were disappointed by music of the 90s. Fuck you, hairband.

Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, NIN, Smashing Pumpkins. These bands still sell out arenas, fucker.

Go buy some Aqua Net, grandpa.

...and hip hop...the mid 90's were very good to that genre...just saying.

Isn't this the same guy that got mad when someone labeled his group a hairband?

HP Lovesauce - 2010-03-09
I'm not about to defend 90s music as 'Modern Rock' radio has me hating on it - but Joe is a sheltered clueless windbag. Like 90s music didn't embrace classic rock like Zepplin, The Who, The Kinks, Bowie, T-Rex, Sabbath, Queen, Cheap Trick and Boston. etc. etc.

Bloated oneupmanship of cookie cutter genre hoppers and maudlin airy fairy lyrical themes opened the door for 90s deconstructionist. As it did in the 70s. It's the natural order.

You know, he really wasn't deriding the 90s rock scene at all. You might be attacking how he really *feels*, but he is putting forward a (generalised) statement, not that 80s stuff was better, but that more 80s bands that got big in the 80s *stayed* big, and he articulated why he thought that was. Mostly he's correct, too.

Still pissed off and bitter about Nirvana burning the shithouse down?

I think it's ironic some will attack the 80s bands of being cheesy when the 90s introduced a lot of angsty "i hate the world and my parents" bands with equally silly lyrics and motifs, but now it was all about feeling bad instead of feeling good, which is what 80s rock was about. The bottom line is, each side had a different flavour, trying to fight over which one is the best sounds like a huge waste of time. I also imagine some cranky old guys from 60s and 70s progressive/psychodelic bands saying how they were the good rock generation because their songs lasted 20 something minutes and had violin arrangments and what not.
