This is so 90s I need an Ecto-Cooler and some Slim Jims to wash that down.
Slim Jims are alive and well.
True, but the ads for them nowadays suck and are quite forgettable, whereas I still recall many of the great macho man ones.

The most fucking useless addon ever.

I had actually gotten a lot of mileage out of my old Genesis. I was able to pick up a SegaCD, a 32X and a shitload of games at flea markets & yard sales.
I think I may still have them in a box somewhere, though I am not strongly compelled to go digging for them.

The saturn is infinitely superior as a failure than the 32x.
Technically the 32X was a very good piece of hardware. It's just that it didn't have good games or games that exploited its capabilities at all.
Nice potential. Nice idea. Timing was all fucked up. The 32X was DOA on day one. It's really a symbol of how utterly fucked up the communication was...and still is...between SOA and SOJ (and how interested they are in working together).
The lethal element here was: The Saturn launched in Japan at the same time as the US 32X launch (the real joke is that the Japanese 32X launched AFTER the Japanese Saturn by a full month!). A bunch of intended 32X third party games wound up as early Saturn titles. The thing was abandoned by everyone, except whoever at SOA pushed this thing through, the moment it hit the shelves.
The Saturn may have been the dog of the PS1/N64/Saturn era, but it was no 32X. Nothing, so far, has failed as spectacularly as the 32X. Even the Virtual Boy.
P.S. I was one of the poor suckers that owned one. I'm off to shave my beard now.
Sega's idea of a good piece of hardware is cramming as many chips as possible into the thing and expecting programmers to use them all in parallel. It's become a decent gambit now that the tools have gotten better and we're back on the latter end of the "more clock / more cores" cycle, but back then it was retarded.
Actually, Sega learned from their mistakes with Saturn and made the Dreamcast ridiculously simple and easy to develop for.
The PS2 was a nightmare, at least early on, because it was the same kind of technological frankenstein as the Saturn.
Its good to see others giving the Saturn props, black sheep or not it did have a couple of decent titles for the run it had here in America.
I agree with others in that not only do SoA and SoJ not know how to collaborate, as one other poster implied they don't even seem to care to. In itself it shows a profound ignorance on both parties and really makes you wonder why did they bother at all with developing systems?
As for the 32x? Even as a kid growing up, I knew how full of shit these ads were and sensed how terrible this add-on could and would be.
Don't forget how many near-perfect arcade ports the saturn got.....in Japan that is. Thanks to Bernie Stolar and the whole "no rpg/2d games" policy america never saw games like Dungeons and Dragons collection over here, not to mention all the fighters, the 2d shooters and rpgs. Sega eventually wised up with the dreamcast, but the damage was already done. Japan was pissed that they killed the saturn so early, and nobody in america trusted sega anymore.
You're right, the Dreamcast was everything it needed to be. And more. It was a good enough console that it kept Sega in the hardware business after a decade of mistakes.
It wasn't just a lack of collaboration with SoJ and SoA, they would compete and try to steal talent from each other. Also: I liked Saturn, the timing was just weird. For instance, Nights was really impressive, but Mario 64 came out the same summer.
in retrospect "a decades of mistakes" is a little harsh. but they did screw up hard in the first half of the 90s.

Game over, yeah!

Is that the same guy from the Sega CD ad?

Sega has been a constant fuck-up for 20 years and they remain in business.

I had this chunk of shit. It's only useful if you're cracking coconuts.

It's almost like the footage here came from a music video for Bush.
