I think we'd be in even bigger trouble if there were no volcanoes any more. That would mean the earth's interior had cooled sufficiently to solidify. No more magnetic field, everybody dead.

You are partly correct. Once the Earth's magnetic field weakens enough to release Atlantis from it's watery grave, the less confused ICP forefathers that emerge will supply humanity with pimp-clown coats to keep us warm.
