Here's something interesting: This is absolutely not the first spill to have happened. But it is the worst. Shouldn't we be fucking learning from the past, at least about adequate safety measures? I mean look at the Exxon Valdez, where this happened on a smaller scale. The fishing industry, Prince William Sound's main industry, suffered for years, and is still recovering 21 years later. The oil terminal is still there, loading up about 30 tankers a month, many times less than two decades ago, but the prevention services are state of the art. If a spill is so much as suspected, there's an oil boom deployed around the source within minutes. I know the leak here is on the ocean floor, so they would need a lot more than a few thousand feet of boom, but the same principles of READINESS and CONTAINMENT apply. What the hell do we do with the lessons we learn in the past? This just furthers my theory that Texas is the poopchute of the U.S. and that most people there have shit for brains.
