I could swear I saw this on PoeTV before. But I follow my usual "if its hard to find, its not really a dupe" policy.
If that last kid thinks that because two things look different means they can't have evolved from each other, that's just proof he has no idea what evolution is, other than what his lying teacher made up ("I don't want to tell people their ideas are trash." Yes, you do. Just not when their your ideas. I doubt Hindus get equal time). That kid doesn't disagree with evolution, he's never been exposed to what it is.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-07-04 I would totally back you up on that had you not tried to equate "Song of the South" and "Roots."
I have plenty of friends that came here from the south but none of them are Southern Baptist. Those people don't make it past the security system: a sign that says "North, this way," pointing southward.

Google "BLU press" and try to find samples from their textbooks. They are even dumber than you think.

"Some scientists think that the sun may be the source of most electricity. Others think that the movement of the earth produces some of it. All anyone knows is that electricity seems to be everywhere and that there are many ways to bring it forth."

I know evolution doesn't favor intelligence over religion, but come on, these people are doomed.
|
|
memedumpster - 2010-07-04 The moment a first person shooter contains both nudity and the theory of evolution as a game mechanic, the whole institution will crumble away.
|
dead_cat - 2010-07-04 Why? They only need to be smart enough to live long enough to pass on their genes. Intelligence is nice and all, but it's hardly a prerequisite for survival.
|
Toenails - 2010-07-04
Well guys, it's about time to give up this so-called theory of evolution.
I mean, it's not like this scientific theory has been proven or anything.
"How can this nig... I mean, an African-American person evolve from an actu... a white person? We're different skin!!!"

AND IF THE SCHOOL AND FATTY MCFAT WERE TEACHING EVOLUTION TO THESE KIDS, THEN THEY MIGHT UNDERSTAND WHY IT'S NOT ONLY PLAUSIBLE BUT ABSOLUTELY THE BEST MODEL FOR EXPLAINING THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES.
FUCK.
|
dead_cat - 2010-07-04 The problem goes deeper than them not understanding evolution. It sound like these kids never learned anything about how science works. And if you don't understand the basic principles of science and the scientific method, then how the fuck are you going to grasp how important and solid the theory of evolution is?
|
Rodents of Unusual Size - 2010-07-04
Well that was extraordinarily depressing.
I seriously want to take a sackful of fossils and beat all of these people with it.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-07-04
I like the assumption at the end that whites were first and the other races would have "evolved" from whites.
|
Memento - 2010-07-04 The irony lies in the fact that his assumption suggests that 'African Americans' are an evolved version of the original 'white' people, therefore, black people are evolutionary more advanced and superior to white people. Cause you know, Jesus was a white man.

I remember moving from New Orleans to Mississippi and my 9th grade Biology teacher telling the class how black people evolved in Africa because they're closer to monkeys. With a straight face. And she wasn't joking.

I went to a Catholic high school where there were religion classes and there were science classes. There was compartmentalization - "here's why we evolved from apes" in one class, "here's how God created the world" in another class. There was an element of choice to it - you could attempt to harmonize the two theories with one another, you could reject and dismiss one and latch on to the other, whatever, it was - at the end of the day - a personal decision.
Creationism, on it's own, isn't a horrible thing. It's just a religious concept. It's the politicization of creationism that has forced these people to attempt to reconcile their belief systems with science to justify their inclusion in the curriculum. This imaginary "culture war" is starting to reap its first victims: "We gotta teach the kids God's truth as well, or else They're winning!"
Because this is a fucking science class. There's no opportunity for these kids to compartmentalize the information they're hearing. That's a fucking science teacher up there.
|
That guy - 2010-07-09 I think this is what you're saying, but the Catholic church, despite their other problems, accepts evolution.
Now a public school in the bible belt, they somehow can't keep up with the Vatican, which is not a ship that changes course real quick like.
|
Document - 2010-07-12 What I don't understand is why public schools don't follow the example of Catholic private schools and institute an elective Religion class. It would introduce religion into a public institution, yeah, but it would also quarantine it. No more God in science class: you go to your Science lesson at 1 PM, get some knowledge in your skull, then head off to your voluntary 2 PM Religion class and either choose to disregard or synthesize the contents of the Science class. Simple.

As a future science teacher, I expect to be much better at my job than this man.
Sad thing is, he probably believes he is doing a great job of being neutral and teaching kids to think independently. Fuck, I'm depressed.
