I've always hated Futurama, never understood how anyone could get into a show about the future, hung up on making incredibly out-of-date jokes (a recurring villian is Nixon for christ's sake), either that or constantly falling back on lame character gags no more complex than THE ROBOT SMOKES AND DRINKS or THE SQUID DOCTOR IS BAD AT HIS JOB. After years of hearing from friends how I just didn't get it, how the show really was hip and fresh and was cancelled before its time, I now have this.

A Susan Boyle joke, which in addition to being awful, comes exactly one year after Susan Boyle was topical.

I never have to defend my position again. I can now just point to this clip and go back to watching King of the Hill / Home Movies / Clone High re-runs or anything else of value.

Considering a Futurama episode takes between 6-10 months to produce, a year is actually pretty fast for them.

Which is another reason why they should stay the hell away from topical jokes. Though the original series made this mistake, too (remember the Napster episode?)

Also: You are incredibly wrong, and even if they make a hundred more crap episodes, it won't make the original run of the series any less brilliant.

Futurama is good. If I thought it was bad I wouldn't have bothered to criticize them for this.

While I really didn't like the groaner "Susan Boyle = Boil!" gag, the context of this episode is the rise of viral videos and how the Futurama crew get into a war of attrition over who can film the most popular video.

Fry wins by filming a "Boyle" popping video, i.e. two of the most popular viral video subjects-- Susan Boyle, and boil popping videos, the latter of which I only found out about because of it's recurring place on PoETV.

The episode kind of sucked, but the realization that they weren't just making a Susan Boyle reference for "WACKY RANDOM HUMOR" lessened the blow a little.

Why does POEtv always try to make me feel bad for liking things?

Admittedly a Susan Boyle joke is weak but there were probably 50 good gags in this episode that balance it out.

So basically I watched them all in a row and when I saw the episode I needed a shoulder to cry on. Luckily the next one was a *lot* better.

There's still something off about new Futurama but basically I'll give them a pass for this despite posting the video. I just hate anything having to do with the internet and there's now way they could have known that.
