I don't get it, frankly. Apparently, you can spew hate on the radio for twenty years, but say the N WORD and that's going too far.
|John Holmes Motherfucker |
On the other hand...
Yeah, black people can say it and white people can't. Those are the rules now. You don't think that's fair? STFU.
Having been born with a black grandfather, and subsequently called a nigger for the SLIGHT amount of curl in my hair and tan in my skin, I must say I found it quite shocking that a black woman from Tennessee told me I was racist for telling the story. I guess talking about racism is racist? I don't know what the fuck is going on anymore. I'm not black enough for racism to effect me?
African-americans are the most racist people on the planet: FACT.
Next in line are French-Canadians.
Oh man, have you ever seen black people interact with Asians? AWK-WARD.
Let me guess, you`re from the wester provinces are you?
I think BorrowedSolution was having a tongue-in-cheek moment: FACT
Caller: My husband's friends offend me. How do I get him to understand my views?
Dr. Laura: Nigger nigger nigger. Whites are oppressed. Also, nigger.
That`s it? THAT is all what the fuss was about?
It's great that there are white people who think it's racist that they can't say nigger because they're white. "All those black comedians can say it, why can't I?" Why do they even want to say it?
And obviously you should take your cues on what's appropriate talk in everyday life from comedians. It's not like they ever say anything offensive for a laugh.

It's too bad that there aren't any racial slurs applicable to Jews.
There are.... and I'm sure you've heard them before without realizing it. I think there is a slur for pretty much everyone... well, maybe not Eskimos.
Actually, no one's sure where the word "Eskimo" came from, let alone whether it's offensive or not.
I'm well aware that there are plenty of racial epithets applicable to Jews. I was making a point that Schlesinger's argument could easily be turned around on her by someone complaining that they can't say "kyke" just because they're not Jewish. I wonder what her response would be.
Then again, you don't get a whole lot of Jews calling each other "Hymie" in an attempt to own the word, the way "nigger" is used in the black community or "queer", "dyke" and the like are used in the gay community. In fact, when was the last time you heard "hymie" or "kyke"? When people stop hearing words, they fall out of use. Repeating it, in an attempt to dis-empower it, just keeps it in use by the supposedly "wrong people".
That's true, but I think it's irrelevant, as is Schlesinger's point.
I suspect that oppressed communities only attempt to try and dis-empower words when those words simply will not go away. Black people and homosexuals cannot as easily hide their status as the Other as Jewish people (and other European nationalities/ethnic groups) can. This observation may be heading into dangerous territory, but the means of assimilation and concealment that are available to Jewish people (et al.) simply are not available to blacks and homosexuals. That's not to say that Jewish people have had an easy time assimilating, or that they are somehow immune to prejudice or hatred, by any means. It *is* easier, however, to conceal and/or reject your religion and ethnic heritage--especially if you already look like your average European American--than it is to conceal or reject your skin color or sexual orientation. Consequentially, epithets against Jewish people (and other European nationalities/ethnic groups) fell into disuse, whereas epithets against blacks and homosexuals remained in use because those groups could not as easily hide their Other-ness.
Therefore, the argument that blacks have less cause to complain about a racial epithet than other oppressed communities because some blacks still use the epithet is itself a double standard.
Charles - Eskimo is used to refer to Yupik, Inuit, and sometimes Aleut people. It isn't really a slur as much as a way of referring to the major indigenous people of the region.
A Yupik would probably be offended if you called them an Inuit.
Merzbau... I stand completely corrected. And wtf_japan... thank you for providing me the only example of mature debate I've encountered in a long time. Point, counter-point... a lost art.
Rape Van Winkle
"Eskimo" comes from a Cree word meaning "eaters of raw meat," because Eskimos didn't cook their food. Eskimo is considered offensive by some Canadian Eskimos, and also to some oversensitive whites in the know.
So saying that a word is "sort of a slur" in a tongue-and-cheek response is the same as equivocating the word to the N-word?
To differentiate between us, you can be False Equivalence Charles.

Apparently a justifiable outcry over her rant from private citizens is depriving Dr. Laura of her First Amendment right to have a radio show. Just ask Sara Palin.

This cuts off the "Don't marry outside your race" part.
Honestly, the first step in improving race relations in America would be actually defining what racism is.
Unfortunately, coming up with a definition that everyone understands would probably set race relations back fifty years.
You also run into the problem of getting everyone to agree to and abide by the new definition.
HOT HAM N CHEESE IS GOING TO SLAP YO ASS BITCH!
What can we learn from all of this?
Stop giving idiots radio shows.
Why would a black woman call Dr. Laura? That'll teach her.
Wow. I'm white, male, and middle class, so I've never really had to put up with bigotry. I can only imagine how frustrating and dehumanizing it must be to be the subject of bigotry and then, when asking for advice about how to handle it, being told that you're making too much out of it and and you're really the problem. That is mind-blowing ignorance and hate.

How in the hell does Obama fit into all of this? At least I can take comfort in knowing his election to the White House keeps her on edge fearing that one day Obama will unleash his negro army to steal from the white man and rape his women.
this is why we cant have nice things.
(freedom of speech)
Gotta love conservatives and blow-hard radio hosts with a conservative bent. They blow their FREE MARKET horn as much as possible...money should guide everything and the market should ultimately be controlled solely by money!! But, if you get radio sponsors to drop advertising on radio shows because they'd rather not be associated with the program: OMG FREEDOM REVOKED THIS IS LIKE STALINIST CUBA AND I NO LONGER HAVE FREE SPEECH RIGHTS.
Ouch. Seriously why does ANYONE ask Dr. Laura for advice anymore? She's a shrill cunt with no compassion, do people really think "Oh I'll be the exception, I'll be the one Dr. Laura won't tell to stop being a victim with hurt feelings."
Hey, I'm just happy that this whole fiasco is responsible for her quitting her radio show by the end of the year.
HAW HAW BETTER LUCK NEXT LIFETIME BITCH!!!
|Rape Van Winkle |
I've never wow-giggle-facepalmed so many times in one video. N-million stars.
I'm kind of amazed that no one has mentioned the casual racism of "a lot of blacks voted for Obama just because he was black, that's TRUE, that's not racist" and "whites voted him in and you've got a chip on your shoulder"...I guess it just got buried under the avalanche of more professional racism that immediately follow.
what the FUCK?!?!?!???!!!?!?!
"Don't NAACP me."
