This is bullshit because Darwin is dead.
I'll tell you what the Church of England said to Darwin.
It had nothing to do with the Bible and everything to do with
being upset that the British Peaceable Kingdom was in fact not set in Peace. Okay, so that's irrational, but not the same as Creationism.

So this is even more jerkoff material for people that care about evolutionary science and who gives a shit about that because evolution is science, etc.

As I'm slowly beginning to accept, many "Creationists" have established positions in the scientific community, they just have a deeply rooted belief that the societal fragmentation that faithless evolution foments in the population will destroy everything including their tenure. I don't really care about this, because I am a leftwing atheist and I think religion is garbage, personally, but I think it's interesting. It's "interesting," and respectable, but not right.
Not right because it can't solve our absolute problems.
But it isn't wrong, because I'm not on the ground with Palestinians getting cholera trying to build a better future like so many people who frequent this network.

but i don't want life to be complicated

all i want is us and them

I did like this video, despite it being jackoff material for evolutionists. I guess, for me, it is really nice to see someone address all the misconceptions and hysteria surrounding a topic with a degree of grace. This woman's preaching to the choir doesn't really change anything, but it does feel good to hear someone quietly defending the truth.

At least, my version of the truth.

Now I don't feel so bad for ranting in the burka video. You tried to make me seem irrational, baleen, and here you are equating people who support evolution with people who are trying to kill Palestine.

What's next, throwing in people who support gravity with satan worshipers?

HarrietTubmanPI - 2010-08-23

Oh and baleen, they may be creationists and have established fields in science, but they don't use creationism to further science - and most of them end up talking out of both sides of their mouth. They'll go to church and say one thing, then get in the lab and when they're forced to be honest do something completely different. This is why they can publish actual peer-reviewed science but why they have to write popular press books and write blogs to get their creationist viewpoint across.

Most of the creationists are far away from biology anyway - and the ones that even try to do geology or paleontology have rarely, if ever, contributed to science.

It's easy to be a creationist and an engineer, for example (the falaysufs as much as proved this centuries ago) but not so easy to even barely comprehend evolution and make a case for creationism with a straight face.

kingarthur - 2010-08-23

Or you could live in the fantasy world Frank Tipler inhabits. I'm still surprised that Tulane hasn't kicked him out yet.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-08-23

The neat stuff here is all of the distinction that she's able to make, such as: opposition to natural selection vs opposition to common descent; passively mistrusting evolution or actively pushing, say, flood geology; ID as a strict subset of creationism... it's almost taxonomic :)

pastorofmuppets - 2010-08-23

(and yes I am jerking off even as I cry for Palestine)

Final note: I think Gerardus Bouw was a sort of sparring partner for a professor I had. The prof wrote a philosophy of science book that was largely centered around history's changing understanding of planetary motion. He also shepherded the astronomy club, and was a cartographer in his spare time. Dude was the Ali of arguing about the earth.

cognitivedissonance - 2010-08-23

The deathbed confession slander is the bedrock of so much of this nonsense, and it's a genuine testimony to the Creationist Right's desperation to cling to fantasy that even if it's proven it never happened, it must be assumed to be a conspiracy of science.

phalsebob - 2010-08-23

Darwin's daughter publicly accused Lady Hope of lying her ass off about Darwin's deathbed conversion in 1922*. She never replied to the accusation, and liars and ignoramouses have been repeating her bullshit since 1915 despite clear evidence to the contrary.

It's apt justice that Lady Hope will be remembered mainly for the lies she told.

*http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/hope.html or wikipedia or whatever.

chumbucket - 2010-08-23

what would Darwin (who's LONG dead) say?
So correcting the hypothetical with the hypothetical. OK thanks, where's the free coffee, babe?

Other than this, the breakdown of intelligent design and creation science she gives is of some good la-z-boy scholarly interest.

memedumpster - 2010-08-23

Darwin would say stop arguing from authority.

Udderdude - 2010-08-24

Darwin would be too amazed by 128 years of scientific advancement to give a shit about a bunch of creationist tards.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-08-26

He would go nuts over the cache of fossils we've dug up. They not only provide some last-minute, incontrovertible proof for a theory that didn't need it, but also show the existence of creatures that no one even dreamed of. He missed out on Mendelian genetics. Perhaps most importantly, he missed out on DNA.

He wouldn't be surprised by the opposition. He was mocked, along with Wallace, Lamarck, and many others for daring to suggest that species are mutable (let alone commonly derived).

Still, I bet he'd be disappointed that it's stuck around so long. That so many deny our origins, even after this many years. He saw common descent as beautiful and awe-inspiring, and in his letters he sort of assumes that eventually the world would feel the same.

She touches on a lot of this in the lecture. I hope people are watching it instead of commenting on the title.

Preaching to the choir or not, I like this woman.
