This movie would have made a great documentary, but I guess some Hollywood hotshot wanted to MAKE A STATEMENT. Besides this goofy scene, the ending sucks in that docudrama way. Since John Carpenter (not the director of "Halloween"... a different John Carpenter, played here by Willem Dafoe) was actually acquitted of Bob Crane's murder, the film can't say that he did it, or show the killing, nor can it leave us pondering the mystery, since there are no other suspects presented in the film-- though the man fucked a lot of other men's wives, so you do the math. It doesn't bother with any evidence against Carpenter. Carpenter must be the killer, it seems to say... because, if he wasn't the killer, what the hell have we been watching for the last hour and a half?

There's a short documentary on the DVD that seems to have been thrown together rather haphazardly, but it's six times more interesting than this. Just doing the research, assembling the known facts about Bob Crane, and telling the story would be worth enough whiny, contrived fantasy sequences to fill a whole season of thirtysomething.

On the other hand, that guy who plays Werner Klemperer (Klink) is astonishing.
