Oh man thanks for submitting this. After the Orphan's Benefit cartoon was posted, I'd been trying to remember where I saw this documentary.

As adorable as Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston were, they always struck me as a bit naive, in the whole "well gee golly, Walt was always nice to ME, anyway..." way. Of course he was, guys! You were two of his top animators and you didn't strike! Everyone else didn't get the same lovely treatment though.

Really the two most important things anyone needs to know about Walt Disney is that 1.) he ratted out a ton of people to McCarthy out of personal spite rather than actually thinking they were Communists (not that that would be much better) and 2.) he hated gays and went out of his way in many, many ways to destroy the career of, among others, Tommy Kirk.

And now his company owns Pixar. It gets better.

He didn't rat 'em out just out of spite. It was 'cause they were forming a union to organise strikes and demand higher pay. I mean it's still douchebaggery. These kind of stories are easy to tell, though. THE DARK SIDE OF [thing that is usually assumed to be wholesome].

You know, Pixar are allowed to tell whatever stories they like. They made a pretty moving pro-gay short film for the It Gets Better foundation. They're given the freedom to use the Disney machine to make films with pretty strong anti-consumerist messages, like Wall-E, and they do it using the strong principles of animation storytelling that Walt Disney pioneered. In closing, what the hell are you talking about

Don't forget about the ex-Nazis he hired to help design rides at Disneyland.

And how people were supposed to actually be living in Epcot as a sort of super-Aryan Eden.
