I just watched this and it's probably the most horrible, chilling thing I've ever watched. It sets up Jones' appeal and power in the beginning really well. Then you get to see footage of Jonestown's talented residents putting on a great show for Congressman Ryan and everybody's having a great time just hours before they all die.

The sound is missing around part 7 but it's mirrored elsewhere on youtube. This was really fucking horrible.
Anaxagoras - 2010-12-31
Yeah. It's much creepier that the residents *didn't* have the cold, lifeless eyes you might expect from that situation.

this is an amazing documentary, stick around until the part where the children's choir is singing religious songs of praise specifically about jones

One of the few doods to survive was given the duty of ferrying the cult's hard cash to the Soviet Union. I can't recall if he actually did so.

I had no idea The Peoples Temple was such a progressive, multicultural, communal, peace & love type of organization. It honestly makes the whole thing scarier because these weren't sad or desperate people looking for something to fill the void in their lives. These were caring, spiritual folks who wanted to generate social change and create a better world. What a fucking waste and what a horrible, ego maniacal shithead Jones was. Not only is he responsible for the deaths of 909 people, he destroyed the dreams and hope of thousands.
Anaxagoras - 2010-12-31
Keep in mind they actually *were* generating social change. They established several old person's home, and had donated money to various charities & liberal political candidacies.

What a fucking waste.

Can we have a "cult week" here on Poetv? It has potential.

As if we needed it, proof positive that the best cover a drug addict, crook, sex offender or sociopath ever had was to put Reverend in front of his name.
