"Kawaii" is Japanese for "cute". The "ka" is pronounced like "cat".
"Kowai", which is what these people are saying, means "scary" or "creepy". A common and fitting mistake among otaku.

Jet Bin Fever well, technically it has four mora, ka wa i i, but the i's are sort of stretched as a result, so close enough!
And, when I was learning Japanese many years ago, I called my professor's kids kowai by accident. Good memories there.
