And here's the soiled panties aisle.
Udderdude - 2011-01-14
He sure is in Japan.

Gotta say, it's refreshing to see an American actually partaking in Japanese culture and not being weeaboo about it. Kinda interesting, actually. Like a "regular joe" travel channel show just seeing how the average guy lives, and not going down the market street trying out all the strange stuff. Kinda cool just seeing their version of a modern store.

This. A thousand times this.

badideasinaction - 2011-01-14
True. I find it funny now that, minus the sake aisle and handwarmers, I can go to the Korean grocery supermarket a mile away from me and get pretty much the exact same stuff.

World is still getting smaller by the minute.

cognitivedissonance - 2011-01-14
It must be just as bizarre for the Japanese grocery store clerk to see a short, thin American that isn't wearing cat ears and buying every Anpanman product he sees.

This makes me miss Uwajimaya, which I worked across the street from when I was at Amazon. In San Francisco I have to go to Japantown to find stuff like this and it's all done up weeaboo-style, aside from a couple of little grocery stores where the cashiers roll their eyes when they see white people come in, because most of us are horrible.

Mother_Puncher - 2011-01-14
Hannah Minx should do a walkthrough of this same store just to see the difference in this normal guy and her weeaboo nonsense.

most of this stuff isn't new to me. actually, a lot of it i've seen in the grocery store i work in. the west coast of canada probably gets more asian immigrants and students than eastern USA though...

Saves the best to last; horse enema and designer rice!

Crunky! Natto is friggin' nasty.
Hooker - 2011-01-15
I do not get the fascination with this culture.
Supahfly - 2011-01-15
The fascination is with a perceived culture, which makes it much sadder.

garcet71283 - 2011-01-15
Saddest is that the real culture is only about 40 years removed from the third-world and has the social attitudes of the 19th century America.

Meigji is damn good chocolate though. I much prefer it to Hershey or Nestle.

This was my favorite part of porting in Tokyo and Osaka back in the 90's. The rest of the crew ran off to see the tourist sights and bars, my friend Dan would take us to the normal stuff...and then bars. I was fascinated by it all.

My favorite thing, talking to english speaking locals about little things like this, and wondering to them, why many items had english writing on the front of packages. :)
garcet71283 - 2011-01-15
I heard it is pretty much the same reason a lot of English items will have kanji or somesuch on them...because they think it looks cool. Was this pretty much what you gathered?

Their food is different from our food!

Already being here, this holds nothing new to me. I do get the fascination with the everyday side of things, being much the same way when I explore new parts of Japan. Found a vintage bar that was inexplicably decorated with shittons of anime toys for my troubles.
