It should be "banded iron foundation". For the curious, they're thick sedimentary deposits of rust formed over more than a billion years as dissolved free iron was oxidized by trace oceanic oxygen from early photosynthesis. Only after this sink was exhausted could levels rise enough to support our kind of animal life.
