Hey, it's George Takei with long hair!

Great video. Didn't know they were doing the costumes back in '73 as well, but I should have assumed.

I think to myself "the title and the preload image alone justify all sorts of stars", but then Ambassador X from Ecosystem 4 shows up and makes all that irrelevant.

kingarthur - 2011-03-06

Is he supposed to be sprouting a lobster from his forehead?

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-03-07

Yes, and Ecosystem 3 has prawn heads.

Rudy - 2011-03-07

Even now, he watches the discussion thread under this video on a monitor on his home planet and plots revenge.

Wander - 2011-03-06

Maybe it's just what the cameras focused on, but it seems like there were more women then than there are now.

Spit Spingola - 2011-03-06

Even now I don't think Star Trek has quite the gender gap that a lot of nerd stuff does.

badideasinaction - 2011-03-06

I think it's the age as well. Look at anime cons now - girls probably outnumber guys at those cons too. As they get older, the guys seem to stick around more, the girls bail.

Ersatz - 2011-03-06

Not shown are two guys arguing loudly with each other:
"Captain Kirk was the best captain there ever will be."
"No, Captain Kirk is the best captain SO FAR, asshole."

BHWW - 2011-03-06

Plenty of nerds, but a lot less hambeasts than you'd see today.

snothouse - 2011-03-06

Wow, great observation. Less morbid obesity then, even with shut ins.

pastorofmuppets - 2011-03-06

I'll become a trekkie if you can arrange transport to 1973.

Herr Matthias - 2011-03-06

Michelle Malkin?

My mother was a convention going fan almost from the start. She was even ahead of the curve on collecting memorabalia, which didn't even really start until Star Wars, and she had a costume to go along with it.

My dad didn't know about her hobby when they got married, as I was on the way and she wasn't going to squeeze into her outfit until afterwards. Needless to say, it was a source of contention for decades.

Jet Bin Fever - 2011-03-07

I've only seen footage of Asimov a few times, but it always strikes me that despite being a really strange looking with those burns and the crazy nest of hair he sounds almost too normal. I want for him to have some sort of characteristically unrecognizable accent and be from some tiny European country like Latvaria or Potslyvania. There's something unsettling about him sounding like one of my neighbors.
