Well, the "flash-sideways" represented a kind of stop-over point between life and the afterlife where Obama is trapped by lingering issues here on Earth. Once those issues were resolved, Obama was free to move on to the afterlife by walking through the double doors.

I'm so certain they've been planning this for months. Granted they were probably planning to say it if there was another Bin Laden tied attack, but they may as well throw it into the mix to remove some of the credit of his death and capture.
