I think it was said best in Caddy Shack. "The world needs ditch diggers"
Supahfly
I'll vote too.

The USA needs more than a PR campaign to entice people back into trade skill occupations. Right to work policies, shitty pay scale and crap work conditions in states and counties with depressed economies make that desk job look pretty fucking golden.
pastorofmuppets
You're right, but I doubt anyone can provide that in a way that lets us compete with places where the working conditions drive people to suicide.

I also doubt they could avoid gleeful sabotage by the half of us who question a run-of-the-mill birth certificate but uncritically accept laissez-faire.

Go Build Alabama and call it a day.

I've always thought that if Rowe ever ran for governor of anything, he'd kill.
Buggerman
He speaks truth. Everyone is lazy these days... all clamoring for a limited number of cozy desk jobs where their actual job amounts to contributing shit-all to every day life. Everyone is in school trying to earn useless philosophy / liberal art degrees or dime-a-dozen computer science degrees. And for those who are not in school, there are only so many Walmart and Mcdonald positions to fill.

There is a whole generation of people who find themselves all grown up with absolutely no marketable job skills. But that is Bush / Obamas fault of course.
pastorofmuppets
Yup, everyone is lazy but you.

I'm intrigued as to why you think computer science grads don't have a marketable skill (provided that they apply themselves, of course).

Also, I'm not sure if you know this, but we don't even have manufacturing jobs left to fill. There are, however, jobs in business and the FIRE sector, and liberal arts degrees are fine for getting those jobs.

Are you still in high school?

Buggerman
No I am very lazy actually. Ive had a desk job myself for the past 8 years. I work at home and only for about 4 hours a day and I dont even get dressed. Its a decent living, but very lazy.

You must be one of those Liberal artfags I assume? Sorry for offending you.

pastorofmuppets
IT guy & developer, no degree, pursuing CS but pushing 30. You either have a degree and take it for granted or don't and treat it like sour grapes.

Buggerman
Graphic designer with a meager 1 yr community college certificate (which no one as ever asked to see). I too am pushing 30.

My main beef with CS type edu is that there are so many lazy people looking for a easy payday and schools pump out these CS grads like popcorn. The result is a saturated and polluted industry full of incompetent boobs who can never make it past their probation. Ive seen it play out time and time again.

Ironically its the "uneducated" programmers, designers etc. that are actually worth anything because surprise, surprise, they have to WORK for it.

You left out the Coast Guard.

Some folks in my program are planning on doing IT. They won't be prepared, because it's not an IT program. So you get those types, and maybe they'll end up driving some poor designer crazy.

Design is a different beast. Customers with no design sense go to 50dollarlogo or whatever and it undervalues the work. And the languages suck, although Ruby's found a niche. I hope Scala does too.

I dunno. It's obviously a sore subject with me. I can tell you that Google and the like expect a BSc, and have no problem weeding out the 90% who benefited from grade inflation to get at the 10% who know their shit.

Valkor
What is the purpose of an education? Hint: It isn't just to give you a marketable skill set.

It would be very nice if all of the plumbers and ditch diggers were well educated.
Buggerman
It takes skill and experience to be an employable plumber. That's why it is called "skilled labor" and not just "labor". Any crackhead can dig ditches.

School has many advantages, but don't start crying when you spend tens of thousands of dollars on an education that has limited real-world applications. It doesn't matter how bad the economy gets, people will still need their lights and toilets to work.

Valkor
Please don't ever talk to me again.

But he has opinions! Important ones!

Buggerman
Opinions are like assholes, you know.

Rodents of Unusual Size
Isn't downplaying a college education just as bad as stereotyping skilled labor as uneducated?

Food for thought.
