The whole surrounding area is known for its UFO sitings (most likely because of the area's involvement with nuclear weapons and the secrecy and security they would require) and the movie is loosely based on UFO folklore.

The coordinates are about an hour's car drive south of the airport, and closer to a bunch of factories and test sites.

Actually, no. If you go to 40N 36' 10" 104 44' 30" W you get the general vicinity of Ault, Colorado, about 55 miles north of the airport, and completely unrelated to the airport.
