Dannemeyer is the old dude in the preview image.

From his 1989 book, Shadow in the Land: Homosexuality in America, Dannemeyer wrote: "[People with AIDS] emit spores that have been known to cause birth defects."

He also supported Lyndon LaRouche's California Proposition 64, which would force all people with HIV/AIDS out of their jobs and into quarantine.

Depressingly, Dannemeyer's still alive. He's gotten crazier over the years too.

Crazier? You mean "more electible"?

B. Weed - 2011-06-02

His Senate run in 1992 went nowhere and he seems to be more or less retired, for what that's worth. His asshole buddy Bob Dornan's still a Representative for Orange County, though.

Back then there was a lot of misinformation about how HIV traveled from person to person. I did buy into some of those scare tactics.

Of course, I was only eight at the time, so I have no idea what this guy's excuse is.

Xiphias - 2011-06-02

His excuse is that he was trying to push legislation that would round up gay people and put them in "quarantine." So he lied about AIDS.

spikestoyiu - 2011-06-02

I was probably about the same age and scared shitless of AIDS.

Xiphias - 2011-06-02

When I was in 4th grade my teacher told us how homosexuals put dirty needles in movie seats to give you AIDS.

memedumpster - 2011-06-02

I remember when I was a kid there was this gay rights march called "the Wedding" that made the news. My dad saw it and said "could you imagine me laying my head on some MAN?" Many many years later when he found out I was gay, he said "that's okay so long as you don't fuck a nigger."

I hope he's alive in an afterlife somewhere watching me tell all of you this.

Robin Kestrel - 2011-06-02

I had a teacher (young guy) in 1981 tell the whole class, apropos of nothing, that the solution to the "gay problem" was to "round them all up and put them on an island somewhere."

jangbones - 2011-06-02

Thanks for the stories, although I will miss sleeping soundly.

Whenever I get cynical about the world, I think about how far we have come in just twenty or thirty years. Even if every channel was Fox and every radio show was Limbaugh, it wouldn't matter, progress is inevitable.

that would be the most fabulous island ever

memedumpster - 2011-06-02

What's sick is after 30 years we're closer to a cure for AIDS than Republicans, though Republicans kill lots more people annually.

Squeamish - 2011-06-02

What's sick is that we're closer to a cure for AIDs and the Republicans DON'T CARE.
