Small farms like this spread across the US, served by a cooperatively owned packing and distribution company would provide cheaper, cleaner, higher quality meat than is available to most people here now.

True, maybe even feasible, but how many people are gonna march for heavily regulated hog farming co-ops? Like, try imagining a John Lennon song about it.

Old_Zircon
Not the farms, the distribution network. Farms would be small, independent, sustainable, far more efficient than current factory farming methods, which are only efficient in terms of concentrating profits in the hands of the smallest group possible. The benefits in terms of price to the consumer are pretty much a result of subsidies.

Needs a "piggery" tag.

I do not use that word nearly enough.

This is really wonderful. I've worked in water quality management in the past and my god those CAFOs are the worst. They really stress out any system they're put next to. Any alternative to that is great in my book.
