5 stars because this will be the start for a flurry of feminists videos on the web.

Tortured women crying in the background.
"You're fucked!" being one of them.
That clip is just like if someone took Prey (a five-year old, B-quality Xbox game) and turned down the graphical quality, lights, and color scheme, removed the AI and enemy diversity, got rid of the level designers and artists, and took out all interesting ideas including artificial gravity, portals, spirit-walking and multiple colliding civilizations sharing the same space, and only added to this bare-bones framework a healthy dose of angry sexually-frustrated misogyny.
"The level with all the sobbing rape victims"

Granted this is a little strange; that being said, did any of you actually play Duke Nukem 3d? Naked women begging you to kill them is what passes for a major plot point in the game. This is nothing new. I also can't really believe that you are all so shocked and offended by these kind of shenanigans.
Duke Nukem 3D didn't have an audible alien gangbang going on in a rape ship. It didn't have abortion jokes. It didn't have two women having their alien rape babies explode out of their bodies while Duke Nukem comments indifferently "Hmm... you're fucked!" It didn't have wall boobs and a loading screen that says "Slap wall boobs because real women don't like theirs slapped."
Duke Nukem 3D was tongue-in-cheek. This game just hates women.
It's just as crass as it ever was, just with more voice acting and fewer technical limitations.
Once again I concede that the wall boobs are a bit on the...bizarre side, but the rest of this shit? I'm afraid you are incorrect sir it was all in DN3D, not to mention being a science fiction plot standard for decades. maybe you never got around to the 4th episode, "the birth", in which all of the things you describe transpire. Claiming Duke was ever anything but crude and profane (tongue in cheek included) would be a heinous misnomer. Maybe the game sucks, maybe the jokes aren't sidesplittingly hilarious, maybe you are the worlds staunchest defender of womens rights, but the outcries of appalled disgust at the descendant of "shake it baby" duke freaking nukem seem awfully forced.
I did play DN3D, and there are moments in this game like the scene Old_Zircon linked to that are worse than that:
Mark-Kate and Ashley Olsen: "Duke, we were raped by an alien, but are going to mention we had sex lots of times before that, to emphasize that we're sluts!"
Duke: "Hmm, then I guess you deserve your horrible death."
Duke: "Time to run around murdering moaning women by punching their tits, while saying how sad it is that it's always the pretty ones who get raped. Because now I don't get to fuck them. Which is all they're good for."
More importantly, your point seems to be that because it's meant to be offensive, you can't understand how people are "offended by these kind of shenanigans." It doesn't have to be surprising to be stupid.
DN3D could be interpreted as a misogynistic game. This is basement-dwelling-level bizarre fetishism.
This game does not deserve your efforts to play devil's advocate.
It could also be the realism in the current game that makes it more disturbing. When limited by sprites that have two frames (the cocooned naked women from DN3D, the dancers, etc.), it's cartoonish-looking and doesn't have the same impact. The audio wasn't as good back then, either; the dialogue sounded like it was coming from a cell phone receiver, and there wasn't enough to make ambient noises of suffering without bogging the game down.
Imagine watching the old Atari cart, "Custer's Revenge" as portrayed by photorealistic "actors" instead of 4-bit graphics. The original we can laugh at as being ludicrous and offensively amusing, the 'updated' version would be vastly disturbing. If a Looney Tunes cartoon was rendered in this engine and featured a man named Elmer being realistically blown up by his own hunting rifle, the result wouldn't be slapstick comedy.
This isn't a defense of the new Duke Nukem, but one reason (of many) that it can't work this close to "real life."

"Got milk?" in 2011.
I have a hard time believing it isn't exactly that.

People grew up and found out the immature games they loved as a teen were gross and stupid.

When DN3D came out it was technically amazing! there was nothing else like it.. It featured stuff that looked like stuff!! and you could do stuff!! look up!! It was a seminal game that you basically had to play as there werent that many pc games out and it was so technically good.. Who cares about the misogynistic clothes it was wearing. I wasnt into that even when I was 14. I preferred it when it was being atmospheric ,like remember the 2001 ripping off bit with the monolith?
|Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2011-06-17 |
actually in a way it reminds me of crysis. Who cares what the games like but its this technical showpiece that you have to get your pc to run!

Closer, but still not the impression I had while playing Duke on DOS.

Well im not ashamed to say that im a massive Duketard, but "The Hive" still left me with a pretty bad taste in my mouth because of the sadistic imagery.
Still, i think the problem isnt misoginy (Duke is an even bigger asshole to his male friend at the end of the game) but more that they took a character like Duke who is very, VERY cartoony and simple and put him in a scenario
that certainly is not a laughing matter (rape) and expected him to work in it.
It would be completely out of character for Duke to just drop to his knees and cry at the sight of the bondaged twins aŽla Dom in Gears of war.
Still they couldnt have him just mockingly laugh at them like an asshole, so they had him adopt a third stance : "the twins are already infected and thats sad, but fuck it, what can you do? Let them die and then lets go kill the queen to honor their memory"
Incredibly stupid and tactless way to infuse some more DUKE LIKE EDGINESS!1 into the game but thankfully it was only present in that small part of that particular level.
Apart from that i enjoyed this game a lot, but i honestly think Gearbox should have spent more time on actually making a good game rather than trying to break the DNF curse. They cut out 15 single player levels that they are going to give us as DLC in the future. I would gladly have seen this game get a holiday release with all they levels intact. Team Dukematch and playing Pinball in the Stripclub is the most fun im having with this game right now.
So the self-identifier is Duketards. Of course it is.

I love how a super-stupid FPS that's basically scraping the bottom of the barrel is getting all this free advertising by so many gamers white knighting the female gender so bravely. It's a dumb game with a dumb character that should have been put to bed years ago but Take Two wanted to make a little money on their very, very unwise investment into George Broussard's cocaine fund. Let it go...
Oh no, free advertising.
We've fallen into their clever trap.
Duke Nukem is the chessmaster.

It's funny how much we were prepared to overlook with Duke 3D. In retrospect the alien hive levels were kind of disturbing, with all the ladies looking sexy with their boobs out asking you to kill them, but because the graphics were so abstracted we didn't think anything of it. Maybe this isn't too far from the spirit of the first game after all
I found this! It's concept art of the female sidekick that was going to be in this game, which should tell you something about the Rob Liefield-y 90's mentality they were bringing to this.

Well, I'm disturbed and surprise, I don't want to even play this game sometime after copies are hitting the bargain bins out of morbid curiosity anymore
