Mr. Purple Cat Esq.
So everyone'll have to use usenet now??

Also the USA *really* sucks balls. As they always do regarding any misguided policy they will now pressure other countries into following suit.
eg. war on drugs
Mr. Purple Cat Esq.
also by "USA" I mean USA goverment. I think USA is so big its always been even more difficult then usual for the actual citizens to control their crazy-ass government.

Bootymarch
Five for really depressing evil. This just further proves how much hold the big corporate juggernauts have on the US government.

I mean, really, you can't fucking tell me that piracy is even in the top 100 problems of this country. If it's being billed as an "economic crisis," then our congressmen don't understand basic human psychology. Probably an eighth or less of the people who pirate shit would buy it given that piracy didn't exist. And most of this money would go right into the RIAA's gaping asshole anyway.

Fuck.

Old_Zircon
Isn't sharing pirated software already a felony? How's that working out?

jangbones
Obama - who conservatives think is super-liberal socialist - has done the following since getting elected;
1) Kept the Bush tax cuts (which are crippling our economy)
2) Failed to pass real, meaningful oversight regulation to the financial industry after the amazing credit crunch-predatory lending-toxic asset debacle
3) Continued almost all of the previous administration's constitution-melting Patriot Act laws and provisions, including Gitmo, and refused to prosecute anyone caught blatantly breaking laws in The War on Terror
4) Has done more to criminalize and punish corporate and government whistleblowing...ever
5) Is the most vigorous administration in prosecuting illegal immigration in fifty years

...and probably about three or four more I can't think of right now

The current White House is to the right of Reagan. And I mean FAR to the right.

Liberals are suckers.

StanleyPain
You forgot the blatantly illegal military action in Libya which barely registered a blip anywhere in the US thanks to most people on the right having big boners for war and people on the left trying to rationalize it as OK since it's Obama.

Cena_mark
Jangbones, You've listed many of the reasons why I've warmed up to Obama. Do you know that under Obama, drone attacks have increased 5 fold.

Mother_Puncher
Go ahead and add "Made it more illegal to download/stream media than it is to walk in a store and steal it" to the list

Cena_mark
Its just wonderful to say I was right. Obama wasn't the great liberal messiah you were promised. He's just politics as usual.

Xenocide
If Obama is a typical politician, then how do you explain the atypical amount of vicious hatred constantly being thrown at him from the right? Shouldn't you be out there correcting the "Obama is the worst president in history/the antichrist/a socialist dictator" crowd?

Or could it be that conservatives just want to be able to switch between the "Obama is politics as usual" and "Obama is a historically catastrophic disaster" lines of attack as it suits them, and you honestly think no one is stupid enough to notice the contradiction?

Xenocide
Hm, that should have read "you honestly think everyone is too stupid to notice the contradiction."

baleen
Drone attacks, that's the libertarian way, right cena. You're such a tool it's hard to imagine how you are able to wipe the drool from your mouth and report to duty in the morning.

Obama is pissing me off quite a bit, but then again, he's also really good at playing the "long game" and I've always been surprised at what he's been able to do considering how fucked up our political system is. It heartens me that conservative moderates are warming up to him. It will make his victory easier. Bush pushed hard right in his 2nd term, until he became a lame duck. It will be nice if Obama steps back from his "Democrats Are Tough, Too" posturing. Before the GOP took over the House, his platform was very different. Hopefully can get back to the kinds of reform we saw in 2010 with things like the Wall Street Reform & Consumer Protection Act and Lilly Ledbetter. The GOP, as it so happens, is trying to roll back the reforms that would have prevented the Great Recession. That's what their agenda is.

To say that Obama is farther to the Right than Bush is just absurd, of course. You've cited areas where he has compromised with the Right, in places where he's trying to keep the Right from dominating the news cycle. That's the game everyone plays. That's the game conservatives have played since FDR to the tune of trillions of dollars in debt and an insoluble Cold War Machine.

You did forget one big piece of Obama's hypocrisy, that he's hired 200 of his contributors, which he said he wouldn't do. That's the total amount Bush hired in his entire 2 terms as president. So he lied. Did I think everything would be rosy pink? No. Am I happy Obama is president? Yes. Is he a better president than Reagan? Absolutely. Will he pull further left if the Dems miraculously take the House in November? I'll put money on it.

kingarthur
Call me a hopeless cynic, but to me, Obama comes across as diet Reagan. He, along with the DNC, have not done anything to adequately address class issues in this country and that needs to start happening yesterday.

SteamPoweredKleenex
Cena, for starters, you never said he was or wasn't a messiah of any kind, at least not on POETV.

Secondly, if you actually "knew" this, you wouldn't have complained so much about him being a socialist, etc. and actually voted for him.

Good luck arresting, well, everybody.

And fuck you, entertainment industry. I wish they'd realize they'd have even more money if they'd plowed the cash from the lobbying and lawyer's fees into actually making something for broadcast or DVD.
cognitivedissonance
But investing in creativity RISKS money! Maybe an artist might do something bad!

You can see the quandary they're in.

Aelric
I posted this mainly as a heads up in case you haven't been following the news. While I doubt the 10 strikes law on watching a stream will really be enforceable, they are likely to make a few examples of people in the coming months. It'll eventually become a blue law to lack of ability to control it like everything else on the net. Just in case, I'd get some IP address masks and/or proxies.
Mother_Puncher
I'm glad the government took time out of tracking down and fighting terrorism and actual threats to the country to protecting Hollywood by slapping the cuffs on a 15 year old boy streaming Battlefield Earth.
SteamPoweredKleenex
Streaming Battlefield Earth probably falls under trolling and/or hate crime legislation.

Mother_Puncher
I'm pretty sure that whole movie is poetv worthy material.

dead_cat
Yeah, he single-handedly robbed them of the billions of people who would have otherwise bought Battlefield Earth DVDs.

oddeye
Now I have incentive to steal as much as I possibly can before this is enforced.
Caminante Nocturno
Good luck enforcing this.
dowstroyer666
Agreed. There are far to many violators of these proposed laws to actually arrest every single person. So just another way to single out those deemed a threat and remove them.

Schwa
How does one reasonably ensure the material they are viewing is legal through the streaming source? For example, is watching a music video on youtube *always* safe, regardless of the legal status of the video because youtube is a source that polices their content?

From my amateur perspective this bill seems nonsensical because it is too difficult for an average viewer to determine the legal status of the streaming content.
Smellvin
If you see it that way, then that's hardly the least nonsensical part of our judicial system: http://www.amazon.com/Three-Felonies-Day-Target-Innocent/dp/159403 5229/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1308512406&sr=8-1 (remove spaces as needed)

Schwa
That book looks interesting, thank you.

I'm not being snarky, but what do you mean by "if I see it that way." ? I admit I only scanned the article and the comments here. Is my interpretation of the law wrong?

Smellvin
Not at all. I was just saying that if you see a law nonsensical simply because it puts an undue burden on the citizens, then there are plenty more where that came from!

kingarthur
This is ridiculous. What happened to try before you buy? Not to mention artists/writers etc that choose to allow their work to be distributed this way.

"...wire tapping anyone SUSPECTED of illegal streaming"

Dear God, fuck the government.
cognitivedissonance
PROBLEM: Manufacturing is down.

SOLUTION: Ramp up the prison slave labor by making examples of those pesky liberals and their internetting.

COROLLARY PROBLEM: So many people will be in prisons that nobody will be able to "enjoy" the products produced by prison slave labor to justify the expense.

COROLLARY SOLUTION: Sell all that shit to China!
SteamPoweredKleenex
You're leaving out the other two GOP solutions:

Criminalize abortions.
Give the wealthy yet another tax cut.

garcet71283
Whelp, we are all felons now. Time to stop voting.

So, hows that hope and change working out for everybody?
Caminante Nocturno
A lot better than a brittle old war monger and his pet idiot would have worked out.

dead_cat
I would have voted a hamster into office if it kept Palin from being a heartbeat away from having her finger on the button.

dead_cat
Waiting for whatever new and improved sharing software that allows people to get around this will be the hardest part.
dairyqueenlatifah
Honestly I wouldn't worry too much. The likelyhood of this actually being enforced is slim, or so I would hope. You have to remember that legal measures, ones dumber than this, are constantly introduced, that doesn't mean they'll come to pass.

And if they do? "Undernet" here I come!

SteamPoweredKleenex
I'm almost thinking we're going to get a network made from open routers, bootleg copper and fiber, and a bunch of people volunteering to keep old PCs running Apache in dark corners of their basements humming away.

Chet
The streaming bit makes sense. This isn't about individuals streaming to their client. This is about sites that charge people an entrance fee and then stream movies to them. They just want streaming to be covered under the same rules as offering to download.

The wiretap change is stupid. The radio provision is nice. Here is a more sane article - http://bit.ly/esZzjB
