That's not fair, he left out the only reason I'd ever think of buying a 3DS. You know, the port of that Zelda game from 13 years ago. That I have three versions of already.

Chalkdust - 2011-07-14

but you don't have to constantly take the boots on and off in the water temple anymore!

Cena_mark - 2011-07-14

How dare you Irish, I'll bet you're just waiting for the next Madden game and to play another stupid FPS.
Just kidding. But that's exactly what I was told by POE's raging Zelda fanboys when I put Nintendo down over yet another port.

Toenails - 2011-07-14

Is it just me or is the Nintendo's latest (3) consol(s) turning into exactly what the

~Atari Jaguar
~Neo Geo Duo
~Sega Saturn

were when those companies finally folded as home entertainment systems?

Xenocide - 2011-07-14

The Wii, despite its pathetic software situation, is one of the most financially successful consoles in history. I don't think it qualifies for the Jaguar award.

The 3DS will probably do okay, but it'll never be as dominant as the DS or Game Boy, thanks to consumers suddenly noticing that the PSP exists.

The Wii U? Yeah, that could be a disaster. It's not even out yet and people are already confused as hell as to how it works. The whole appeal of the Wii was simplicity of control. I don't think too many retirement home residents are going to be lining up to play a game console that you control with a tablet that also has another, smaller game running inside it, while your friend uses a Wiimote to collect coins or whatever.

Xenocide is right. If you're an Xbox 360 fanatic, you may want to stop reading.

Wii Sports holds the world's record for most sales of an individual game. It has outsold all the top 12, Xbox 360 games combined, which includes Grand Theft Auto IV, Kinect Adventures, Fable II, the entire Call of Duty series, the entire Halo series and the entire Gears of War series. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_top_selling_video_games#Wii ) Still for total game sales the most successful game systems are the Playstation (PS) and Playstation 2 (PS2) which sold a combined total of 2.472 billion (with a "B") games as of December 31, 2009.

As far as consoles sales are concerned the Saga Saturn "only" sold 9.5 million not too far behind the Master System at 13 million. But to put it in perspective: Gamecube sold 21.74 million, Xbox sold 24 million, Xbox 360 sold 55 million, Playstation Portable sold 70 million, Wii sold 86.01 million, PS sold 102.49 million, DS sold 146.42 million and the current record holder is PS2 at 150 million. The 3DS has sold 3.61 million but it was release in 2011 so it's not doing all that badly so far.

The new PSP has 3G connectivity, but can not be used as a phone because then it would be a phone and not a handheld console. Also, they are reducing the internal memory to meet the price point met by the 3DS so they can eventually release an "elite" version later with more memory and claim that it's better then it's competing product.

I, personally, think that the PSP will remain in the niche it always has been. A handheld for people who want a media player attached.

Hooker - 2011-07-14

Wii Sports came with the console. That's a pretty dishonest argument.

IrishWhiskey - 2011-07-14

It's also worth pointing out that the consoles had additional goals beyond just game sales.

Sony took massive losses early on to establish Blu-Ray and HDMI, and sell HDTVs, all of which were successful. Microsoft built themselves as a gaming brand from their middling third place last generation and pushed a subscription online system (both successful) while promoting PC/mobile device connectivity and growing in the Asian market (less successful). Nintendo didn't subsidize their console to promote different technologies they'd additionally profit from.

Xenocide - 2011-07-14

Well, if you discount games that came with consoles, then the best-seller on the Wii is Wii Play, which is also the best-selling non-bundled game of all time, and has sold more than twice as much as the 360's top selling game.

Bonus fact: Wii Play is terrible.

Hooker - 2011-07-14

Again, Wii Play was bundled with the second controller, and I would venture to say that this is the primary way it was purchased.

Hooker - 2011-07-14

Look, I'm not saying that the Wii is a failure or anything. Clearly it has been wildly successful. I'm just asking for honesty when people make their points, and comparing something like Wii Sports to Grand Theft Auto 4 is clearly either dishonest or ignorant.

Xenocide - 2011-07-14

Sorry, but that's just an excuse. I'll give you Wii Sports, but if we're going to start nitpicking over what games came with premiums, we may as well discount any PS3 or 360 games that came with downloadable content bonuses.

Harveyjames - 2011-07-14

Hey, I really like some of the games that come with Wii Play. They're not much different to first-wave Famicom software. Nobody says Duck Hunt or Clu Clu Land are terrible.

twinkieafternoon - 2011-07-15

I agree with Harveyjames that game packages with simple games that strive for communal play have a place. I've played more Wii Sports Resort than any other console game in the last two years, and I don't even own it. I played with my buddies.

Fact: I always win basketball 3 point shootout.

Xenocide - 2011-07-14

No one does quick and heartless console abandonment like Nintendo.

Meanwhile, on the other consoles:

Welp, think I'll go play through Mega Man 2 again.

IrishWhiskey - 2011-07-14

I wanted to disagree with that, so I looked at my 360 library to count the non-Shooter titles I'd played in the last year. Except for gunsight games, some were third person shooters, the rest were Rock Band.

Riskbreaker - 2011-07-14

DUDE ARENT YOU PLAYING WITH YOUR KINECT? ITS THE FUTURE...OF....of...

Xenocide - 2011-07-14

*You are standing too close to your television. The future is cancelled.*

Explodotron - 2011-07-14

Long post didn't post... here's the short version:

1) Iron sights are a gameplay mechanic.

2) I could never get past those damnable beams in Quickman's stage.

1394 - 2011-07-14

HAHAHAHA Dust coming out this year that's too funny.

StanleyPain - 2011-07-14

I'm not sure what that graphic is supposed to represent. It's like saying HOPE YOU LIKE JUMPING during the era of platformers. I mean, that would be like saying Super Mario World and Mega Man are identical games.
Prey 2 doesn't even have anything in common with Modern Warfare, for example, other than guns and shooting. I mean, is Bioshock really comparable to, say, Battefield 2 because both have a shooting mechanic?

themilkshark - 2011-07-14

Wii is my only video game system. I get by fine, but then again i hate all FPS's that aren't Metroid.

chumbucket - 2011-07-14

This guy as their spokesman.

Mother_Puncher - 2011-07-14

Oh boy.

oddeye - 2011-07-14

Who is this fat-ass?

Harveyjames - 2011-07-14

Pilotwings Resort looks fucking rad :(

dairyqueenlatifah - 2011-07-16

I laughed.
