This is pretty much why I submitted this; because it's just such a disjointed mess and never really gets to any point. To be fair, where I live they're kept busy in the summer towing people who decide to go out on the lake with a half a tank of gas and a broken radio, and in winter recovering the bodies of guys who bet someone that they could swim across the Cuyahoga river drunk.

To be fair to the Coast Guard, I will say that they do some important shit. They enforce archaic maritime standards that often don't make sense in the modern world, and someone's gotta do that. It doesn't matter, for example, that a Casino boat might have their own in house cleaning crew that cleans the bathrooms every day with industrial chemicals. If the Coast Guard wants them to mop the floors with vinegar three times once a year, then that's going to happen. Also, if any kind of welding or plumbing work is going to be done, gosh darn it the Coast Guard had better know about it. And there had better be a guy who's job it is to just stand there for hours without any eye protection and watch a guy weld, so he can be there with a bucket of water to put out any errant sparks. Also, they have to make sure crazy fire drills with impossible constraints are thrown, to get people to think critically. Throwing a fire drill and a man overboard drill at the same time with barely a skeleton crew - now that's keeping people safe! (Hint, in case you ever find yourself in the same situation - the fire is more important, let the dude drown)
