Jet Bin Fever - 2011-08-27

NOoooooooooooooooooooooo the memories!

fedex - 2011-08-28

where'd the horse go?

Pompoulus - 2011-08-27

So it's not just a clever name. Eh? Eh?

Oh come on kid lighten up.

poorwill - 2011-08-27

I heartily recommend the book. It's pretty different - Atreyu has green skin and the horse talks. Also, Gmork the werewolf has the best death speech in all of literature.

dododge - 2011-08-27

Also the movie just sort of cuts off less than halfway through the book and slaps on a happy ending. The author got upset enough to have his name stricken from the credits (he did take a credit on the sequel, I can only assume for the cash). If you go looking for the book, note that the text is supposed to be printed in red and green. The paperback approximates this by using font styles instead, but there's at least one spot where it doesn't carry over perfectly.

BTW Hathaway has apparently decided to try acting again, and at the moment IMDb shows three films in production.

Gmork - 2013-04-29

The book is fantastic. An alternate login name choice for me was YgramulWhoIsMany.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-26

I really need to reread the book as an adult, I remember it was good but I was too young and attached to the movie to totally appreciate it.

Juice Eggs McKenna - 2017-09-02

I don't remember Gmork's scene in the book but the showdown between Gmork and Atreyu in the movie is still one of my favourite scenes of all time.

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2011-08-27

This whole movie freaked me the fuck out. The lightning when the kid is reading the book, the wolf, the swamp.... even the giant Gamera ..... I just can't handle it man! I can't!

Baldr - 2011-08-27

I was really young when I saw this movie, and don't remember any of the details, but I do remember it being traumatizing enough that I ran out of the theater.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-26

You people are nuts, this movie was the best thing ever when I was like 6.

PlushJake - 2011-08-27

I didn't watch this clip. I know what happens. But I just can't watch it!

Ursa_minor - 2011-08-27

Jesus fucking christ this scene is sad. I spilled a lot of tears over this scene, countless times as a kid.

TheSupafly - 2011-08-27

This was one of the saddest moments of my childhood. And I do mean that in comparison to when my pets died.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2016-05-02

I actually saw "Old Yeller" when it came out. Everyone, including my parents, had their minds blown by that one.

It turned out God gave Old Yeller rabies because Travis was gay.

riedquat - 2011-08-27

That horse did NOT give a fuck.

Pompoulus - 2011-08-27

Look it's not just this, I've been down on this 'being a horse' bullshit for a long time.

cognitivedissonance - 2011-08-27

...the horse actually died.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2011-08-27

Its true. In the DVD commentary they explain how they had to comfort some of the crew members after they let a horse drown in a swamp right in front of them.

glasseye - 2011-08-27

D:

Macho Nacho - 2011-08-27

This just makes the scene more traumatizing.

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2011-08-27

I'm actually of the belief that this is a persistent rumor. There is no hard evidence of this happening, and in fact, there is a story of this scene, but it does not follow the myth. Real story is that Artax struggled a bit, and accidentally hit the actor playing Atreyu. The actor fell into the mud and cut his leg on the platform that was holding up the horse, and he had to be rushed to the hospital.

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2011-08-27

In fact, I just hit gold:

User 'CGIBinLadin" on SomethingAwful was the actor who played Atreyu (the kid). iknorite?

On page 4, about halfway down, he confirms it is a myth, but that he was in fact hurt during the filming of that scene and HE was dragged down under the water.

I knew it was a Myth. I wasn't about to let myself be that sad.

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2011-08-27

Fuck!

threads - 2011-08-27

I'm pretty sure it was revealed that CGIBinLaden was lying. Most telling is that CGIBinLaden is apparently a sys admin and Noah Hathaway is a tattoo artist and motorcycle customizer.

Dread Pirate Roberts - 2011-08-27

:( ... drat, should've kept reading... and should've known better than to trust goons.

THA SUGAH RAIN - 2011-08-27

Guys it is on the fucking DVD commentary, why would they make that up?

Louis Armstrong - 2011-08-27

Find me this DVD commentary. I must see it.

threads - 2011-08-27

Yeah there is no way I'm watching this.

Wonko the Sane - 2011-08-27

Not only did that horse die sad and miserable, he died BECAUSE of it.

Jimmy Labatt - 2011-08-27

Man, fuck this stupid horse. Have fun at the glue factory, Artex

FABIO - 2011-08-27

Poll: was anyone sad over a human's death in any movie as a kid?

Jimmy Labatt - 2011-08-27

Yes: That dude who got his stomach sliced open in Robocop II

fedex - 2011-08-28

Yes: when Ron Perlman's buddy got killed in Quest for Fire

memedumpster - 2011-08-28

Yes : When Darth Vader died in Return of the Jedi.

Gmork - 2013-04-29

the alien turtle bug that gets eaten by the tentacle in enemy mine

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-26

Don't watch Enemy Mine as an adult. I tried. It's better to preserve the memory.

Nikon - 2011-08-28

I went in expecting a lighthearted fantasy movie.

EvilHomer - 2011-08-28

I laughed when Bambi's mom died. I shrugged and moved on when Optimus Prime bought it.

I still cry whenever I think of this scene.

Old_Zircon - 2015-05-26

My generation's Old Yeller.
