Poor thing. Deserves a "pica" tag.

kamlem - 2012-07-23

It's now the hidden 6th tag. Thanks for the suggestion.

She can't have been eating all that much sand, if she lived 15 years doing it without having some kind of bowel obstruction incident.

gmol - 2012-07-22

Googling seems to find a lot of stories, including the case of a woman who has been doing it for 40 years (the article claimed 4 pounds daily). Seems pretty credible.

Digestive system obstructions seem to be an (obvious) risk of this type of behavior (that and things like heavy metal poisoning, ugh). Digestive systems are pretty damn robust though, obstruction doesn't seem like an inevitable outcome even with (what seems like) copious ingestion of sand.

A woman with a clear mental disorder "Cured" by Christianity.

So now she'll either suffer with her mental disorder in silence, or be driven even more unstable by breaking down and eating more sand.

I really hope that she's a spiritual enough of a person to believe she's been cured by the exorcism so much that it's actually cured her.
