My friend worked at a video store in the eighties, and in the computer, there was a space for notes on the customer page.
One regular customer was a total dickbag, so my friend helpfully wrote "this guy is a total dickbag" on his page.
So of course the customer was renting on a day when my friend was not working, and another employee pulled up his page, started laughing at the note, and the customer saw it. My friend was fired.

"They should sue the restaurant out of business. That's as bad as if they wrote "Stupid Niggers" on a table of black customers!"
I tried to explain to her how this is a different matter, and that in either case there's not really any grounds for monetary compensation. I failed miserably on both counts.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2012-12-11 That's not what I was saying at all. Of course calling a group of black patrons niggers would get your restaurant sued. That doesn't mean they actually hold legitimate legal grounds to sue you on.
So someone was a jerk to you by calling you a mean name on a dinner receipt, and you got your feelings hurt. Why do you deserve money for that? What is the money going to do? What did you lose as a result of their calling you said bad name? What financial or material loss that detrimented your economic or physical well being resulted from the incident? They isn't one.
You don't deserve any money for being offended, nor do you have a legal right to never be offended. You do, however, have a legal right to free speech, and thus, the right to tell people how poorly you were treated by a business as their customer, and how you will never do business with them again, and to suggest that neither should they.
The business has no legal obligation to give these women anything, but they have a business minded/PR obligation to. They fired the guy, apologized, and offered them half off their bill. I don't really understand what more anyone wants for them, or thinks they should do.
