This pretty disappointing. Those two are my favorites and I don't like the thought of them having a beef. Then again Waterson does seem as sanctimonious as the 6 year old boy he created.

Xenocide - 2013-07-19 Yeah, this feels more like two pals tossing out friendly insults. Breathed also included the speedboat cartoon in his final Outland collection, in which he speaks quite fondly of Waterson.
Note how Ronald-Ann Smith is basically drawn as Calvin with braids in that toon, complete with the standard "Calvin running from something" pose.

MORE COMICS BEARD TIME: The cartoon at 0:50 is a reference to an incident where Breathed included a photocopied image of a young Nancy Reagan in the background of a sunday comic. Ronald Reagan thought he had drawn it, and was so moved to see a positive caricature of his wife in the paper for once that he called Breathed out of the blue to thank him.
Breathed happened to be completely naked when he got the call. He did not share this information with the president.
Aside from Reagan, I can't think of a figure I associate more with the 1980's than Opus the penguin.

Breathed's career is really kind of depressing. He started with the utter genius of Bloom County (once it moved beyond a Doonesbury ripoff), but he would always retire then come back with a new comic exponentially worse than the last. Outland and Opus became more and more about sentimental parenthood mush and less on actual humor.
Just more proof that the biggest step to creative suicide is having kids.
