Theater down the block from me plays The Room on a monthly basis. The only thing separating The Room from Chuck Norris Jokes is that The Room was funny while it lasted.

I don't like Tim & Eric and I don't like this. Telling a bad joke that you know is bad isn't really funny. Black Dynamite is probably the best example of how to make an amazing movie that pays homage to bad movies of the past. This is the opposite of that.

YogurtGarfield is it a Landmark Theatre? I missed the whole Room thing by about a year but was still stuck with the longest running ROcky Horror in the world.. :(

But I'm reminded of Grindhouse. Building that film was such a pain in my ass because lines and wraps and shit are built right in, and people like to go to movies without reading what they're about, so I never knew if it was my mistake or the film's intentional mistake when customers came out to the lobby to complain. Thing is, this is what Alamo Drafthouse does, and Death Proof and Planet Terror (and even Machete) did it really well. This I'm just not feeling.

Speaking of Black Dynamite, Kung Fu Hustle was another good example of how to do this right, or even the Edgar Wright films. There's nothing wrong with "so bad it's good" nostalgia, we all love Godfrey Ho after all, but this is "so good it's bad."

I don't really think Kung Fu Hustle was a celebration of bad films. To me, that was a a celebration of wushu films, which is a massive genre in Hong Kong, and many of which are excellent. I don't think Edgar Wright movies qualify, either.

Doing a "bad movie" isn't an excuse to be lazy, which is what this looks like. Guiltily, I still haven't watched it, but Kung Fury looked like they were really pushing the envelope of what they could do technologically and creatively. I doubt whoever made this challenged themselves at all.

Yeah Kung Fu Hustle is not particularily different in style from Stephen Chows other wushu comedies, or a number of other wushu films in a similar vein. Kung Fu Hustle is a genre film, not a parody of a genre film.

Yeah you're right. I was actually going to say Kung Fury instead but I didn't know if that qualifies as a movie given its runtime. Besides some of the lame "found footage" VHS tracking shit, it's a perfect example of how to do this right.

This on the other hand reminds me of when we had 3D Porn at our movie theatre for a little while, which really was a thing back in the 70s. And what sounds better than 3D John Holmes Cock, which can also time travel? Anyway they sold out but people tended to leave halfway through when the novelty wore off.
