About ten years ago I read a zine from the early 90s in which, after a good two paragraphs insisting that it's purely a thought experiment and shouldn't be taken seriously, the author lays out a pretty devastating analysis of antisemitic subtext in TNG (above and beyond the obvious ferengi stuff), I really wish I remembered who wrote it so I could find it on line.

What, was it that episode with the evil space merchant who kidnaps Data and wants him to get naked and pose for him while casually murdering his space goyim employees?

Because I'll admit, I never saw any antisemitism in that episode, myself, but I have heard the above basically laid out as a theory that it's all it was about.

All the other chucklefucks are indeed chucklefucks. But Perry has a very special hypocrisy in that she is deluded enough to think she is a champion of human rights and shit. Rush and gang aren't that deluded, they just want to make money. Perry tries to get away with criticizing everyone for thoughtcrime against any of the virtues she promotes, and she is generally whackadoo when it comes to tying in current day issues with whatever thought she had while taking a wiz. For instance she rallies against stand up comedians who go TOO FAR OVER THE LINE but then she tries to make stupid jokes that fall flat like her dumb "race card" bit.

Two questions:

One, what's so bad about what she said? I don't see what the big deal is here. Yeah it's kind of a dumb argument, but it doesn't sound like she was trying to be serious (why would she, given the venue and the subject matter?), and even if she WAS serious, so what? It's a valid complaint.

And two, how does a discussion about "a leftist" who makes a stupid comment, quickly, and almost as if by magic, metamorphose into "yeah but those righties though, they sure are dumb"?

Yeah I don't really see what's wrong with what she's saying (and yes she inadvertently ripped it off from Chasing Amy) in that using a black man's voice for a white character maybe wasn't the best decision. Imagine if Incredible Hulk did the same thing for the Hulk voice, like got Terry Crews or something just for the voice, people would be pissed about that too, even if the intent was just a commanding/intimidating voice instead of twee-and-white-as-fuck Mark Ruffalo's. But these stars are for Star Wars and MHP in general.

Cena - but do you think this way because she really IS the "only crazy lefty", or because you now identify with lefties (however we might define that term), and that makes it harder for you to understand your rival's perspective? I put it to you that, if you were still a righty, you would have been able to rattle off a long list of allegedly "crazy lefties", including Michael Moore, Rachel Maddow, Piers Morgan, Rosie O'Donnell, Kanye, Chomsky, every Hollywood celebrity besides Kirk Cameron, Dawkins, Paglia, and Bill Maher (the last three of whom are to various extents libertarian). You'd almost certainly disown Alex Jones (who is a Bush-hating, Russia-loving, slightly-right-of-center Truther, not a conservative), and probably wouldn't be too harsh on any of the others in your current list. Coulter and Malkin, for example, are (for their own respective tribe) about on par with pundits like Franken or Colbert, while Glenn Beck is fairly innocuous and difficult to hate.

The short of it is, Americans are becoming increasingly emotional and clannish, starkly divided into their own social camps and mostly unwilling to tolerate outsiders. It is not all dissimilar from the racism or religious xenophobia of centuries past; except now (Enlightened as we are) we do not use skin color or church affiliation to define who is Other, but rather, what blogs we read and television channels we watch.

It's hard for lefties to see a lefty acting like A Lefty, so instead, we reroute the damage and get back to a more comfortable narrative.

Great point spikes, and there is a fun fact that nullifies her accusations of racism. They originally wanted Orson Wells to be the voice of Vader, but then decided against it, because they felt his voice was too well known, and didn't want the audience thinking, "Oh, that's Orson Wells" every time he spoke.
