I keep asking myself, where do all the reasonably well-spoken people who apparently voluntarily populated this lunatic asylum of an organization come from? Scientology forces me to ask the Eleanor Rigby question again and again.
The thing is, it's painfully obvious that LRH was seriously disturbed in many ways. But since Scientologists are forbidden from doing any external research without church approval, they can easily be groomed into seeing him as a demigod rather than a scary guy who tied people up and threw them off his ship.
I once passed the scientology booth at the county farmer's market. I told the people there that L Ron Hubbard was arrested for kidnapping his wife and keeping her in his basement, and that Scientologists broke into the FBI. I turned around to leave when the Scientologist woman said loudly "EXCUSE ME BUT WHO TOLD YOU THAT? WHO GAVE YOU THAT INFORMATION?" and I said told the people sitting there that it was all on the FBI's website as well as xenu.net. Then I bought some really good tomatoes.
I should mention that the tomatoes were right next door and everyone at the tomato booth started talking about how fucking crazy all Scientolgists as if they weren't right there listening to us.
