John Holmes Motherfucker - 2008-03-18
I still have my complete set of homemade "Twin Peaks" tapes. I can't tell you how many times I watched this. I loved... and I still love... that it wasn't until the fourth hour that the element of the supernatural was introduced into the story-- and in the most gentle, amusing way possible, with Agent Cooper divining for clues by throwing rocks at bottles. Some people complained about the slow pace, but as far as I'm concerned, they could have taken another year before they found the Demon Bob's host-body.
Eighteen years later, this scene, like TP itself, seems less shocking, less self-consciously "weird", and that makes it easier to appreciate how solid it is. There is nothing random about it. Every shot and every line is effective.
You can see its influence all over TV. Without Twin Peaks, would there have ever been "X-Files" or "Desperate Housewives" or "Lost"?
