'A harsh gaming system' indeed. Kid Icarus was fucking hard.

Caminante Nocturno - 2011-10-14

I didn't even know this game was beatable without a cheat.

cognitivedissonance - 2011-10-14

God, this game.

Anaxagoras - 2011-10-14

I remember spending an inordinate amount of time becoming obscenely good at this game. I could have been figuring out how to cure cancer*, hanging out with friends, volunteering at a hospital**, or playing a better game. Instead, I played this.

* This assumes that 12-year-old-me was much much smarter than current-me.

** Contrary to what you might think, adolescent volunteers are in high demand at hospitals. Doctors like to be regaled with Nintendo-related trivia while performing their duties.

EvilHomer - 2011-10-14

Considering how much time I'm spending watching a Japanese man play Nintendo, I'd probably do that if I were a doctor.

kingofthenothing - 2011-10-14

the controllers had microphones?

EvilHomer - 2011-10-14

It's some controller witchcraft the Japanese dreamed up. Arino's used the Famicom mic in a few other games, but I'm pretty sure that was a Japan-only feature.

Dr. Lobotomy - 2011-10-14

Apparently the microphones could be used in the Legend of Zelda to make those bunny head Pol Voices explode by screaming at them.

Cube - 2011-10-14

Only the second controller had a microphone, and only on the japanese Famicom. They realized it's not worth the trouble, and dropped it on the western NES, thus getting a uniform controller design.

kingofthenothing - 2011-10-14

It's just as well that they didn't include it in the US - there would be a lot of microphones broken by PB&J sammiches.

Redford - 2011-10-14

I only played the game boy version, wherein which the developers realized their mistakes and actually made the game beatable.

YakooMarkTwo - 2011-10-14

I have beat this game a handful of times. It was insanely hard. You had to basically learn every jump and arrow shot by timing. You had to draw out maps of the dungeon boards. You were rewarded with a hot version of Medusa if you beat it fast enough (no pun intended).

This game.... hurts.

Colonel Cowlung - 2011-10-14

Am I the only person that used to beat this game at will? I remember hanging out at a friend's house and playing through it several times in a row. We knew the closing credits by heart. Hip Tanaka did the music! I probably logged more hours on Kid Icarus than any other NES game.

poorwill - 2011-10-14

It's not *that* hard. It actually gets easier as it goes, after you've got a few upgrades. If you grind a lot at the start, it's a piece of cake.

cognitivedissonance - 2011-10-15

When I think of "Nintendo Hard", I think of Kid Icarus. Fuck this game.

YakooMarkTwo - 2011-12-06

I remember Hip Tanaka! Always made me laugh. I love that name.
