Shigeru Miyamoto's single, one sentence comment on it was "It certainly was imaginative."

And never before or since has he ever referred to it.

Definitively proving himself to be the nicest man in the world.

BiggerJ - 2013-11-11
They're making a webcomic based on unused plans for the sequel, and the site's been updated since I last posted it here - http://smbthecomic.com/
BiggerJ - 2013-11-11
Oh, forgot to mention - it's got Toad, it's got Shy Guys, and it's got a ridiculously inaccurate version of Wart.

roofle - 2013-11-12
That's actually pretty awesome.

How was "Bob Hoskins with a flamethrower and jetpack boots" not a smash hit?
Nikon - 2013-11-11
This movie is exceedingly strange.

I also found this review of it which helps explain certain directions the film took:

Honestly, if there hasn't already been so, you could write an entire volume on what was wrong and why.

Kabbage - 2013-11-11
I maintain that if this had no connection to Super Mario, and was just called, like, DINOREALM or something, everyone would absolutely adore it.
Old_Zircon - 2013-11-11
Maybe it's because I didn't see it when it came out (I was 14 or 15, well old enough to know better) and don't have the memory of the disappointment that must have come with that experience, but I can't get enough of this move. It's right up there with stuff like Skidoo as far as complete disasters from mainstream studios go, and I'd take it over Waterworld or Judge Dredd any day (but maybe not Johnny Pnemonic).

I've probably seen is at least 8 times if you count times in high school or college when I worked at video stores and we would play it to confuse the customers who needed confusing.

I agree with this.

Traces - 2013-11-11
agreed

Accidie - 2013-11-11
AGREED. However, this hit the box office the exact same time as Jurassic Park.

Old_Zircon - 2013-11-11
Predicted 9/11

Also worse than it.
DavidBowiesLuckyTennisBall - 2013-11-11
Random question... why do so many films predict the future of fashion being Judas Priest?
Pillager - 2013-11-11
I blame the Road Warrior & Mad Max. Also, leather will be easier to acquire than polyester or cotton blends in the post apocalyptic era.

Accidie - 2013-11-11
the costume design on this film is AWESOME. You shut your mouth.

memedumpster - 2013-11-11
This is a troll submission, because everyone knows this movie is unquestionably awesome. Everyone in this movie did everything right.
SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-11-11
This probably took the shine off of starring in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"

Also, the IMDB lists Bob Hoskins' character name as "Mario Mario." I guess that makes sense since they're the Mario brothers, but is that Nintendo canon?

Anyway, Bob went on to star in similarly amazing fare like Garfield 2 and Son of the Mask (as Odin, so take THAT, Anthony Hopkins!).
Old_Zircon - 2013-11-11
Everything in this movie is canon.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-11-11
Oh, you may joke, but Nintendo takes this crap VERY seriously. When they were making Wreck-It Ralph, Nintendo had this laundry list of vitals for Mario and every other character, down to the centimeter. Their histories sounded like ones you'd only find for minor characters on Star Wars that somehow managed to get five novels of backstory out of about three seconds of screen time.

Xenagama Warrior Princess - 2013-11-12
Mario and Luigi's last name isn't Mario to be exact. Canon so far has stated that his last name is unknown despite the series being called Mario Bros.

Besides, they are like Cher - only need a first name to know who you are talking about.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2013-11-11
This movie is a lot of things, but boring is not one of them.
infinite zest - 2013-11-11
The captions make this movie a million times better: "How could that possibly act" is right
Old_Zircon - 2013-11-11
So, here's the basic gist great Super Mario Brothers: The Movie mystery an art school friend of mine discovered when we watched it together in college.

-Bruce Connor frequently collaborated with Dennis Hopper

-The fungus throne room set in SMB:TM is pretty reminiscent of some of Bruce Connor's installation work, particularly in the late 60s

-Bruce Connor directed Devo's breakthrough video for Mongoloid

-Devo and de-evolution references are all over the movie (Devo guns, the floor numbering scheme in Koopa's headuarters being "Devo 1, Devo 2, etc." and just generally a lot of use of the word "Devo" in the screenplay and set design)

COINCIDENCE?
Old_Zircon - 2013-11-11
Hell yes we were stoned, what of it?

Old_Zircon - 2013-11-11
*Conner

Old_Zircon - 2013-11-11
Here are a couple Conner pieces that use membranes in a way that's definitely reminiscent of the SMB fungus:

So basically, did Dennis Hopper, knowing exactly what he was getting in to, use his clout to pack the movie with in-jokes for his friends (let's not forget that he worked with Devo also, in Neil Young's Human Highway for one) and maybe even get Conner to do some uncredited set design just to make the whole thing more ridiculous than it already was? That sure seems like exactly the sort of thing Devo, Dennis Hopper and Bruce Conner would do if they had the chance.

Old_Zircon - 2013-11-11
Hell yes I'm stoned, what of it?

God bless you all

BHWW - 2013-11-12
This film was directed by the team of Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, early MTV auteurs and the people who directed Max Headroom and besides that they made a remake of the 1947 film "DOA" and this and...their careers never really recovered from this movie and there was some serious behind-the-scenes friction between them and some of the other people involved from what I've heard.
Jet Bin Fever - 2013-11-12
What, no Bob Hoskins tag? :(
Caminante Nocturno - 2014-11-11
I think he would've wanted it that way.
